brown algae

What's the easiest way to get rid of brown algae? I had cut back on feeding
and was shutting the light off sooner to give them a "winter", and suddenly
had an outbreak about a week ago. I assume it is because of the lack of
light, so I have been leaving the light on again. Yes, I know to clean the
inside of the glass, but when I did a water change the other day, I put a
piece of white cloth over the end of the siphon to keep the fish from being
sucked out, and the cloth was brown when I finished draining 25% so it is
free-floating as well.

Salt seemed to perk the fish up, but I didn't have enough. They have about
1/4 tsp per gallon. I will increase to 1 tsp/gallon when I get out to get
some more. Is this the best approach?

brown algae is silicon based, so there are phosphate "pillows" that will also remove
silica from the water. otherwise, enough light and the green algae will take over.
cleaning either off the glass is a weekly ritual along with changing water. Ingrid
