Hi all,

I just noticed eggs in my tank! I have 3 goldfish, about 3 inchs each in
size, and now i have no idea what to do. I don't want the other fish to eat
them. Can someone help?

Phil..

If you don't want to rear fry then leave the eggs in the tank and they will
soon be eaten. If however you do want to rear fry you will need to remove
the eggs. A tub of some description will be fine for them now (an ice cream
tub perhaps?). I prefer to use a dark coloured container as then you can
quickly see which eggs have been fertilised or not if they turn white they
should be discarded as fungus could grow on them and spread tot he healthy
eggs). Don't put them in more than 6 inches of water as otherwise the fry
could get crushed by the pressure of the water. Within hours you will
probably be able to make out 2 little black eyes and a spine in each egg. It
really is fascinating to watch. When they hatch they don't move much and
just tend to stick to the sides of the container or rest on the bottom.
During this time they don't need to be fed. They only need feeding once they
actually start free swimming which takes a couple of days. Then you can feed
them tiny tiny amounts of food (hard boiled egg yolk (mixed with water to
make a paste then dropped in in tiny amounts) is good, as are baby brine
shrimp or liquid fry food). Water quality is extremely important though so
although frequent feeding is necessary (every couple of hours), just a
really tiny amount is needed, as are frequent partial water changes. Once
they are transferred to a tank bare bottom is best as otherwise cleaning
will become impossible without sucking them all up. They are fine without
filtration for a few weeks as long as daily partial water changes are
carried out, but when you do get a filter a sponge one is best, covered in a
pair of ladies tights or stockings to stop them getting sucked in.
Good luck!
Mel.

just use a cup to collect water and replace - that way no chance of loosing fry.
