View Full Version : Cleaning siphoning equipment

I just replaced my tank-cleaning equipment, as the items I had been using
became quite ugly and unsanitary. This stuff is all made of
plastic/polyurathane (SP?). I've read on this Usenet about using
bleach-water solution to keep things nice and tidy, but how much, what
proporations, and how hard is it to remove? How many rinsings will it
require to make my equipment safe?

I know too much bleach can easily kill my little finny friends; I also do
not want my black moor to turn gray, like he's been washed too many times.
;-).

Any assistance is gratefully accepted.

bleach cannot be used anywhere near GF. it kills them dead fast. use PP solution in
a bucket. store it in the dark, it works well to kill cooties. or, use peroxide.
NO SOAP PRODUCTS EITHER. Ingrid

I've used bleach on fish equipment (ornaments/tank/plants). I do
obsessive/paranoid rinsing
afterwards though!

I clean my equipment and fake foliage, decorations etc. with bleach water,
than after rinse and than soak in clean water with chlorout added.
Chlorines are neutralized and I have had no problems with this
routine....Colene

Wow! Talk about an embarassment of riches, information-wise. Thank you all.
However, one additional question: What is PP solution? At first, I thought
peroxide, but obviously it's not.

Again, thank you to everyone. I appreciate the help, and so does my little
gang of "kids."

What about running hot water through the siphon and into the bucket? I do
this after every use, and will use bleach once in a while, with a good
rinse, of course. I was told this by a guy who runs an aqua-maintenance
business. This is what he does, and he cleans a few tanks every day. The
hot (near boiling, but from the tap) water kills most anything. The bleach
cleans out any stains, etc.

Most of the organic load is protein based and using hot water without
a cleanser will set the stain making it harder to remove. You need to
get a cleanser in there to remove the load. Boiling is not a cleaning
method, it's a sanitizing/sterilizing method. Sanitized poop is still
poop.

Try the paint section at your mega-hardware store for TSP (tri-sodium
phosphate, check the label, there's a brand name that isn't tri-sodium
phosphate). It's an excellent cleanser for organic loads. About 1
tablespoon per gallon of hot water works great. Rinse well. It doesn't
have any surfactant so it rinses away leaving no residues very nicely.

TSP is a strong alkaline and should be handled with respect. Rubber
gloves and eye protection are suggested. If you get this on your
hands, it will feel slippery because it will have turned the oils in
your skin to soap.

Cheers,
Jason Henning

Hi Ingrid,
Pretty sure that it was you who recomended
using a bit of diluted bleach to clean out the inside
of a tank every once in a while especially if there
issues with parasites. Please correct me if I'm
wrong?

Also I thought PP was to neutralize H2S gas
(caused by anerobic bacteria) that might be released
when **** disturbing the bottom of a pond for example.
Just read your link and you seem to be referring to it alot now,
was that recently added to the website? Seems like you really
swear by PP...

I never use bleach around the fish. the PP page has been there a long time. it is
Jo Ann's preference, those are her techniques. Ingrid
