According to my empty package of them it's time to replace the ones in my
filter, but I can't find them anywhere!
Did Fluval discontinue them? What should I use instead?

Laguna PowerFlo Underwater Filter BioMax Filter Media. It has a picture
too. I've never seen them in a store though.

These folks (among others) say they carry them:

I have not done business with this company, other people have reported
satisfactory results.
Try google search for biomax rings.

Petco sells those, though when I bought some, I dont believe they were
listed as biomax filter media, but more along the lines of some other brands
name and ceramic glass bio rings. I bought a couple bags of them for a
couple aquariums.
You really shouldnt be replacing them at all in reality. They hold the
beneficial bacteria that you want, so maybe once in a while, just rinse them
out in your water that you pull out of your tank during a water change (Do
NOT rinse them in untreated tap water else the chlorine will kill off the
bacteria). They work on the same principle as biowheels, and substrates,
they have a huge surface area for the bacteria to adhere to for the
realitive small size of each piece.

I just got those from Petsmart. Call your local one and ask if they have
them in stock, you call also call Hagen and ask them for the distributor for
your area.
