View Full Version : Signs of Illness

Hi, I'm new to this group. I am also new to caring for a goldfish.

My goldfish is getting black along the tip of his tail and fins. He moves
around so fast, that's all I can tell! But it looks as if it is getting more
and more. Does this mean he is sick or anything?? If so, what do I need to
do for him?

Thank you for any help! I don't want him to be sick! :(

What are the ammonia, nitrIte and nitrAte levels in the tank?

When and how large was the last water change? If you don't know, do a
50% water change with treated temperature matched water.

EMERGENCY
1. check the water parameters: pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrates
2. do the fish physical
3. change some or all of the water, add 1 teaspoon salt per 5 gallons water
4. from the water parameters and physical decide on a course of action
5. if there is nothing specific, do the tub to tub method

the water is toxic. your fish has been burned and the black is healing. Ingrid

I don't know how to check those things. I have my fish in a 1 gallon tank.
All I have is an air pump and a temperature guage. I clean the water
according to the tank's instruction's once a week--last time was Sunday.

Remember, I'm new to this!

Take some water to your LFS (Petsmart etc.) and they'll test your water for
free. I suspect the water's your big problem.

Also you REALLY need a filter, not to mention a bigger tank - at least 10 US
gallons.

A 10 gallon tank for 1 little fish?? That's crazy! I live in a dorm, I
can't have a 10 gallon tank in here!

I will go to Pet Co for them to test the water, etc.

Actually, I think the tank does have a filter. I don't have the box with
me, but I think it's got one of those undergravel things... lol I'm still
learning!

err yeah, they need oxygen and you don't get much oxygen in 1 gallon. Also
consider the waste
that fish drops into that minimal amount of water. 10 gallons is the norm per
goldfish.

If all you want is to keep a $0.10 common goldfish (aka feeder goldfish) in
a 1 Gal bowl and change the water twice a week and replace the fish every
other month, there is no reason to take it back. If those feeder goldfish
don't die in bowls, they will die in the mouth of Oscars anyway. I don't
think anyone will put a 3 to 4 inch fancy goldfish in a 1 Gal bowl
anyway.(cost of the fish and the size of the fish matters).

A Betta might be a better dorm fish. Goldfish are like puppies - they are cute
when new, but they mess a lot and really GROW and are much more work than they
would appear to be....
