View Full Version : my fry (again :) water retention?

okay, 2 fry (just over a week old) look like they are going to peg it...
They have very bloated abdomens (i thought it was some kind of parasite when
i first saw it) it looks like the skin is distended (not the digestive tract
though, that looks normal)so that there is an opaque sack running down their
belly from under the gills to the anus, they float upside down at the top of
the tank. When there is food in the water they swim down (it looks like a
struggle), take a few mouthfuls and then float back to the top and just sit
there upside down.
Anyone know what causes this? its only 2 fry now, but i know how disease can
spread among such a dense population (120+ fry in a 3ft tank)
There was some fungus on the tank bottom (growing on an errant lump of egg
yolk) that i cleaned out the other day, could that cause it?

I never EVER feed egg yolk - it killed the whole lot of my first batch
of fry in one go. Get them out and into clean water. Try and replace 50%
of the water (at least) daily.
If there is food with mould on in the bottom of the tank then water quality
is probably an issue here. Have you tested the water parameters?
At a week old they eat the tiniest amounts of food so it is very easy to
overfeed. When did you begin feeding them and how much and now often?
Water quality needs to be absolutely perfect.

According to my test strips water is fine, i began feeding as soon as they
were off the sides of the tank, i had no eggs in the fridge so gave them
crushed and strained peas for the first 2 days (half a pea crushed in an
eggcup) twice a day, after that i switched to egg, put 1 pinch of eggyolk
with some water into an eggcup and crushed it to make a milky liquid, which
was then fed through a fine mesh tea-strainer into the tank water, again two
(or three on weekends) times per day, initially i did overfeed them as i
wasn`t using the strainer so needed to get the majority of the excess lumps
out, i only noticed the mouldy food because the fungus made it stick out..

John,
Try getting some Baby fish powder or even better, hatching some baby brine
shrimp - they can't 'go off' whilst they are alive :D

I was planning on getting some from my LFS... but the live brine shrimp they
had were as big as the fry.. I may get some of that powdered food though,
they look big enough to handle it... just did another water change, the
numbers are thinning out and found a couple of dead fry, I reckon theres
80-90 there now instead of 120. added some aquarium salt too, just in case..
