I have ulcers on my Koi... It was suggested to use potassium permaganate or
iodine on the wounds.. I can't get eithier from the local pharmacy... I got
povidone Iodine... Will this work? Or will it kill them?

as a cleanser, yes. or just use peroxide, but keep any of them away from gills and
eyes. PP is actually not great applied directly to wounds, but it sure does work in
the water to kill off columnaris a common bacteria involved in ulcers.
you need to clean up the pond or aquarium as parasites are nearly always infesting
first, then bacteria.
once the wound is cleaned apply triple antibiotic creme, rubbing in well. Ingrid

Alrighty then Ingrid, I actually moved the fish to hospital tank.. I removed
them last night, and used q tips to apply the Povidone Iodine.. Temp is
around 80f in there.. Fairly warm for the Koi, high enough to help them
battle the problem of the ulcer..

I got these fellows over the weekend and I suspect they might have been
stressed in thier location.. A Koi farm of course.. The one fellow looked
like he had an orange anal fin, it didn't look like an ulcer when I viewed
the fish.. Being that they are new critters in my corner I take the
objective to keep an eye on them.. So needless to say, when I went to have a
really good look at them yesterday is when I noticed the issue. Although the
ulcer seems to have taken the finnage to the bone, these guys seem alright,
good appetite and swimming freely..

This morning I pulled them out for an examination and it appears the redness
and inflamation has certainly gone down considerably. I added a fair amount
of aqurium salt to the hospital tank as well, so I noticed the slime coat is
decent for them. I think I will pull them out again to day and clean the
infected areas again.. Perhaps keeping this up for a total of 5 days..
Perhaps this will help them heal.

Sorry for the top poast..

first, I like top posting.
actually, most aeromonas species can be killed by temps of 84oF. aeromonas is a very
common bacteria that produces ulcers.
the fin will come back, altho the rays ("bone" of the fin) wont.
5 days outta do it. fish have wet epithelia sorta like the inside of your mouth. so
if you ever had a canker sore you know how fast it heals. but the water has to be
pristine, no ammonia or nitrites in there at all. very careful on feeding also to
keep excess wastes down. Ingrid

Neither Fish made it, after the areas cleared a bit, they developed dropsy..
They died within a few hours of me noticing their secondary illness..
Unfortunantely them dieing was only the icing on cake for the whole time I
had them.. ( a short time mind you ).. On my way back in from the fish farm,
I blew the engine in my car.. So by them time I am finished totalling my
bills of getting these guys, I am now out just over $1500.. That is the part
that stings the most.. Although I am open for donations for some help to get
my cars motor replaced.. If you think you can help me, you can get a hold
of me here..
