View Full Version : Goldfish Spawned....Eggs....Are they infertile?

Last week my goldfish spawned in my pond and produced the normal lot of
eggs. I did this year as I did last year and pulled all the oxygenators and
other free floating plants out and into a spare tank I have indoors.
Last year the fry hatched after around 3 - 4 days and all went well....
This year all is not well or so it seems. The eggs were produced last
Tuesday and now it is nearly Monday, nearly a whole week and there is no
sign of any fry. Is it too late or is there still a chance they might hatch
out?
I've noticed this year the water smells very sulphurous (not sure if thats a
word but it describes the stench pretty well!) and have been changing the
water in the tank for water from the pond but it always smells pretty bad
again after the day is out.
Some of the eggs are very white but some are a bit clear with a white lump
inside. Last year I could see eyes forming inside the egg but now I just see
a white mass which doesnt look like much. Could the bad water be making the
eggs bad also?
Should I give up and wait until next time? (the smell isnt very nice)

Sounds like bacteria got to your eggs....
Discus eggs go white when they get infected.
Not sure about Goldfish eggs though

Sorry Rich,
You eggs are probably toast, unless the water was
really cool/cold. Especially if they are white. If
they are white and you see no wrigglers the spawn is
probably dead. Although, Goldfish eggs can take up to
7+ days to hatch if the water temperature is in the low
60's. There is a problem with low temperature spawns,
though, and that is there is a high possibility of a
high number of culls do to deformities at lower temps.
How big was the spawn you put in the tank? It is
possible that you put to large a spawn in for the size
of tank you are using. This is one of the problems
that people make with spawns. Many people don't
realize that the eggs give off ammonia as part of the
development of the egg progresses, so this means that
there is an ammonia buildup in the water and if it is
not compensated for, by either by size of the container
(the larger the better), exchange movement of
conditioned water, or the addition of at least one
airstone.
HTH for the future.
