Okay, it is that time of year again. How do all of you keep your tanks
cool, below 80 degrees F when it gets so hot outside? I have thought of
picking up one of those new micro-mini refridgerators (big enough for a
six-pack of beverages), and running my air line through it before going into
the airstone. That with a heater set to 76 degrees would possibly do the
trick?

I live on the top floor of a condo, so if we go away for a day or two and
turn the A/C off, I've had the tank get to 85 degrees, and I just don't want
that to happen. I have a 40 gallon, acrylic, tank.

make sure there is hellatious aeration and dont worry.
if you are going to worry anyway, then put that egg crate light stuff instead of the
glass, remove the lights, put a clamp fan to blow air across the water and help it
evaporate and as it does it cools the remaining water. Ingrid

The mini fridge wont work.

Just leave the AC on if you go away set to like 78f or even 80f This should
keep the tank okay, and if you go away for a day or two, just leave your
lights off for that period. I do that when ever I go away now, the live
plants in my tank dont seem to mind losing light for a couple days, though
they still get the light from the windows (but not directly on the tank).

People have tried dorm room style fridges with many many many feet of water
tubing and while some people reported it worked on the net, most people say
it didnt work. Next best thing of course if you've got the money and
inclination to spend it, would be to get a chiller.

My tank stays a pretty constant 80f, though it can go up to 82, if I leave
the AC off but my tank is tiny, only 12 gallons.

hi Devon,
just in general, i have read from little flyers i get from the electric
company that it would be more economical for you to keep the A/C on and set
it higher, like 75-80, than to turn it totally off and turn it back on when
you return. just my 2 cents. =)
