Fluval question

I had to replace the ribbed hosing on my Fluval 204 today...and when I was
priming it before turning it back on I guess I pumped a little too vigorously.
The intake strainer popped off, followed by a round white plastic ball (a
little bigger than a marble in size).

What the heck is this ball? It's not listed in the manual and Google isn't
helping me.

I assume it has some function but my filter seems to be working without it.

Help!

The ball goes in between strainer and intake tube works as a one-way valve.
