View Full Version : Goldfish attack!

To the list:
I have a 10 gal tank with 6 goldfish, five grown-up feeders and one
black moor. I had more, including 2 more feeders. One of them jumped
for freedom and death, another got fairly big, a healthy-looking fish.
But the others started chasing her (him?) around the tank, nipping at
her body and fins. I thought it was love - man was I mistaken! The
other fish killed her! Instead of a bunch of fertile fish eggs in my
tank, all I had was a dead goldfish.
Man, that's why I gave up on tropical fish, they kill eavch other and
eat their own babies.
Well, everyone else in the tank seems cool with each other, so I
bought a 4" koi to see how it would do. Soon as I put it in the tank
the others started hounding it, same way as they went after that other
goldfish. Anyone know what's going on? is there some kind of fungus
that makes some fish irresistably delicious to others? Is it the
territorial imperative? I took the kopi out and put her in a bucket,
then took her to the Gypsy's outdoor water feature to chill out while
I watch the thrift stores for another tank.
Anyone know what's going on with these fish?
TIA

See step 1. 10 gallons per goldfish, 3 gallons per inch, which ever is
greater.
Koi = 100 gallons per fish.

your tank is way too small. the rule for goldfish is 10 gallons per fish
and the rule for koi is 100 gallons per fish. koi are meant for ponds, not
indoor aquarium unless you have a 200 or 300 gallon tank. your fish are
territorial because they are crammed into a tiny tank. you need atleast a
60 gallon tank right now and id find a home for the koi or give it back to
the store.

Thanks, all,
I guess I'll go out and look for a bigger tank. I knew things wre a
little tight, but the fish sort of stop growing at about 3-4" in the
10 gal tank. More tank, they'll grow bigger and I'll still have the
same problem!
Gu8ess I'll let the Gypsy keep the koi in her waterfall/pond feature.

they dont "quit" growing, they are stunted by the ammonia and/or nitrates that
accumulate... like if you put a child into a little cage. the reason we recommend
10 gallons is that is the amount that will give them the best chance of growing to
normal size and being healthy. Ingrid

To the list:
The Gypsy was back from wherever it is she goes, so we took a look at
the new Koi. It looked pretty happy in with some companionship, all
larger fish, in a 3-400 gallon garden water feature. The new koi BTW
is a beautiful orange-and-black with some gold scales like gold
metalflake paint.
The Gypsy said there is a Koi disease going around, that's a new one
on me. It's a Herpes, doesn't seem to affect goldfish, though. This
page has a pretty good rundown

Again, thanks to all on the list for the information. As for the
"Lady Poe," i know there are people who buy goldfish to feed them to
carnivorous fish, but no gentleman/lady would admit to doing such a
thing. Obviously riffraff.
