Hello,

I have a 20 gallon long tank. I have a large Ryukin, about 4 inches long
and 5 inches "tall" if the include the hump in the measurement:)

The Ryukin had been living alone in the tank for about a month after the
other inhabit, a 3 inch Black Moor died of an illness that caused big
red eyes and white fungus. I treated the Black Moor by putting him in 5
gallon hospital tank and adding Melifix and changing the water every
day. Alas, it didn't work, and the Black Moor died.

Anyway, the Ryukin and the Black Moor had lived together for about a
year and half and they were good friends. When the Black Moor was ill,
the Ryukin hovered around. They stayed close together in a corner of the
tank where the heater is. It was as if the Ryukin was there giving
comfort to the Black Moor. The Ryukin was not at all affected by
whatever ailment the Black Moor had.

After the Black Moor died, the Ryukin moped around. I left him/her alone
in the tank for about a month before I purchased a new roomate, a very
cute 1 inch red/black Oranda. The Oranda stayed in the 5 gallon hospital
tank for 10 days before I put them together. Well, it's been 2 days now,
and they *still* are mostly avoiding each other. The little Oranda is
feisty and zipping around the tank, they are not interacting at all. I'm
wondering if this is typical goldfish behavior?

By the way, in preparation for an eventual move to a bigger tank,
yesterday I purchased a 2 inch google eye goldfish, who is now in the 5
gallon tank. I am planning to get a 75 gallon tank, with the residents
being the Ryukin, the Oranda, the google eye, and two veil tails.
