im having a problem telling the diference between
ryukins and fantails specially during the early years
can any one offer any advice

Bob,
They are all long and skinny when they are fry the only
big difference being those varieties that don't have
dorsal fins and double tails if your eyes are good.
Body depth on a Ryukin should be 3/5's or more of its
body length, preferably more. The body should have
more distinct round appearance when looked at from the
side. This roundness is what gives the fish the "hump"
that most people expect, but is not really part of the
standards for the fish to be a Ryukin.
The Fantail can be in the same depth ratio, but never
over 3/5's, so the body should be more torpedo shaped
like the Comet, but bulker.
