I am sure this has been talked to death, but I don't recall , in my few
months here, that this came up.
I just dug up some older issues of 'koiworld' and read a few articles, on
feeding.
one said you MUST soak feed given to koi(either sticks or the round stuff)
for 10 minutes, since their digestive system is such , that if they eat
DRY(er) stuff, it will take the water FROM their innards to help digest the
stuff. & also that they cannot/should not eat the flake stuff..
now what parts of this are true?
I have been feeding a mixture of flake, stick, round stuff, & other things
that sink(for variety) to my pond critters...goldfish & koi, for several
months........
am I doing something dangerous to the koi?
please give me your input on this. thanks.
typical nonsense and myth found in many venues. the only reason to soak food is if
you got a "floater" fancy goldfish. Ingrid

Just ask your koi, "Would you rather wait 10 minutes while I soak your
food or should I feed you now?" If they are anything like mine they
will splash like crazy and say "FEED ME NOW". After all they are just
pretty colored carp and can and will eat just about anything that fits
in their mouth dead or alive. Because they don't fit fingers don't
count, but they sure try.

I tend to toss in the stick form food right away and soak the pellet food in
water first. The main reason is a mix of koi and fancy goldfish. I have read
in other aquaria groups that those with smaller fish found them suffering or
worse after eating too much dry pellet food that expanded in their bellys.
Mostly happens with the little guys. I feed flake food to my goldfish and
tropicals too. Never been a problem.
