top up with tap or salt water?

Hi,

i am new to marine tank keeping. would like to know what type of water do i
use to top up my tank water level due to evaporation. my evaporation is very
fast bacause i am using 2 fans to cool my water.

tap. ro/di water is better.

For topping up due to evaporation you only use dechlorinated tapwater. The
salt does not evaporate out with the water. When you replace water due to a
water change, you add salt making sure the salinity is the same as what is
already in the tank.
How long have you had your tanks set up and what is in them?

i have had my tank for almost 4 weeks.
right now i only have
01 x blue sponge
01 x orange sponge
01 x green polyp
01 x red polyp
2 pieces of live rocks
01 x box fish
01 x tube worm

since u know what's in my tank. may i have some advice on what's do i have
to do to keep the stocks i have to keep them healthy and alive? so far what
i do is just add calcium solution, interpet liuquified food and brim shrimps
for the box fish.

with what you have in the tank, you do not need to be adding calcium.

you should get a test kit and test before you add anything at all. only add
if needed. and you should test your ammonia, nitrites and nitrates weekly.
if you go with full reef and have a large consumption of calcium (which now
you do not have) you will need to test it more often and see how much of
what your adding is required to keep them at acceptable levels.

thanks for the advice.

is it a must to have ammonia test kit? cos right now i only have a AZOO
nitrate(NO3) and pH test kits. is it good enough? so far my NO3 readings is
below 5ml which i think should be an ok result right? but i only got this
result after a 20% water change. before the water change the readings was
about 40ml.

and also recently i have notice a sudden blooming of brown algae on my tank
glass and sand bed. how do i control such or any kind of algae growth. i can
scrub off the brown algae. but how to i get rid of the brown algae from the
sand bed. will keeping cleaner shrimps and snails help in controling and
cleaning up the algae? and if they help, are they able to live in harmony
with my box fish?

for what it is worth,
I use reverse osmosios fresh water, that i buffer and aerate for at least 24
hours. I;ve had lots of problems caused by my water. Adding salt water
would raise your salinity.
Just out of curisoity, how long did you cycle your tank? (break it in)

one more bit of advice, get more live rock. It is a natural biological
filter. A good rule of thumb is 1 lb per gallon of water.
