View Full Version : pond in Ontario - and the winter we haven't had (yet)

Should I be concerned? Fish are swimming around, not "sleeping".
Approx. 300 gal x 28" deep max pond. 2 @ 6-8" koi and 5 small goldfish.
Fish not fed since late Oct. as is my understanding should not be fed once
water temp is less than 50 F.
Has been unusually mild here in Whitby, Ontario i.e. about 48 F today.
Should be 25-30 F and 2 to 3 " of ice on the pond. Had an inch or so of ice
back in Nov. during a cold spell but is long gone. Pond is winterized with
plants set in bottom, filter and pump removed, air bubbler bubbling away (in
case we ever do get ice).
Should I feed the fish since they seem to be active?

Don,

Fish always do swim around a bit, even in the coldest water. Just recently
my pond water was 38 degrees for a couple of days, of course, now it is in
the high 50's almost 60's. I assume you too will be getting colder very
soon since our cold here always comes rolling in from Canada and here in
Oklahoma we are suppose to be in the 30's next Tuesday.

In any event, do not feed your fish until you water temperature is
consistently above 55 degrees and rising daily. When you do start feeding
them feed them sparingly until the water temperature is in the 60's. The
way things are going around here this winter I will probably be putting my
fish out in February. Of course, we will probably get a late freeze in May
like we did one year.

Thanks Tom and Janet for your responses. Always something to learn about
water gardening and I find this group very helpful.

Here in Mad Moo Land (SE WA) I woke up
at 4am to dead quiet. No power.
Kids and I huddled next to the fire until 8am
when our power came back on but other parts
of our area still out. DH went out to work to huddle over the nuclear pool.
School canceled.
There is so much snow in the backyard I haven't
made it out to the pond but from my daughter's
window I can now see that the pond is thawing its hole
in the water so I don't think it was iced over for too long this morning. In
addition for the fish, the birdies and squirrels like the water hole too.
Low at the airport was 19 below zero. Here beside
the kitchen window it says about 1 degree.

Ahhh,. You had to go mention Ich, didn't you? About 35 years ago I
got into the aquarium hobby thing. I had a 10 gal setup with angel
fish and some mollies. I moved from Lousiana to Illinois in late
November, 1966, carrying the fish in a styrofoam box. It sat on the
floor in the front of the car heater. I spent the night in MO and
left the fish in the car. The next day we drove another couple 100
miles to Springfield, with the fish in front of the heater. No one
had told me to be careful of water temp changes. I set the fish up in
an apartment that was overheated. No problem for two years. Then I
moved them back to Louisiana 2/69. It was near zero when I left IL.
and 70 when I got to LA. No problem. That winter I got a new
aquarium book and read about ich. A couple of days later I found
white spots on the mollies, then on the angels. ICH!!! I was able to
cure them. That summer I read about tail rot ... guess what!

I hate hearing about diseases ... it seems to start them up around me.

:-)

Happy New Year, all.

cover the tub and the 1000watt should do fine. It was 50o 2 days ago and then we
got 4" of snow and the temp is now 7o. my 1600 gallon pond has a plastic covered
lean to over it and a 500 watt heater. The water temp was 56o today, they were up
sucking like crazy so I fed em again. the lilies are still green in there. I will
see if the temp drops by tomorrow. Ingrid

My concern is forgetting the heater and it warming the tub up too much for
it to go without heat while I also maintain the temps in the hot tub. Can't
run both at once. After being plugged in for almost 2 hours at 11*F this
morning and only partially thawing the ice off the top, I guess it won't
get them too warm at these temps.

It's also the bird watering station right now, hope they don't mind salty
water of 0.3%. ;o) ~ jan

Ya just had to let Mother Nature know she had forgotten us eh! Now we
have -13 C, my stream is frozen, my filter is frozen, and we have no idea
what's going on in the pond except that water is moving where it isn't
supposed to be. I expect a line has frozen then popped off or split.

I guess it had to come sometime!

We are getting bored out here!
Third straight day of canceled school
but that does not keep the
kids at home. They are all over here!
And they actually found a pizza place
that was delivering!
14 degrees, lots and lots of snow.
Who knows what is coming.

That feeling of boredom has dissipated here -- first
full day of school for both boys. Oldest actually
said yesterday that he wanted to go back to school,
LOL!! We still have patches of 1-2 inches of snow, but
the thick layers of ice are mostly melted now. Good
luck surviving this wintery mess.
