I have taken and read all the marine books from my local library, they
consist of;

A step by step book about setting up a marine aquarium
A complete guide to marine aquariums
A fishkeepers guide to marine fish
Marine Fish
The Interpret encyclopaedia of the marine aquarium

Can anybody suggest any other good books to read before making the first
steps of getting the aquarium. I feel partially confident, but from reading
the posts in these newsgroups I find often conflicting information so I want
all the knowledge I can get.

Hi Scot

I'm probably inviting incoming fire here but here's an opinion for what its
worth.

Often you'll find that there's differing ways of doing things rather than
conflicting views.

There's often a difference in preference between different countries too.
You'll find that the US makes use of Acrylic Tanks more than you may in the
UK (judging from your e-mail address). Lighting systems differ slightly
between US and Europe also (differing voltages and cycles per second assist
in dividing the electrical markets).
There is no one single way of diving into the hobby, water changes work for
some, de-nytrifiers and additives for others. Sumps and sump mounted
Skimmers for some, external filters and backpack skimmers for other. It's
also not a cheap hobby and you're bound to make some compromises along the
way, until you've got the set up that you can best employ with the space and
funds available. You'll find that every action has its impact, UV
sterilizers are great for assisting with disease control but are likely to
kill off any free floating organisms that your pets may enjoy. Eventually,
with assistance from people on this NG, and alot of trial and error you'll
find the balance that works for you.

I've taken the route of determining what water conditions employed locally
than relying (for instance) on the wide ranges quoted in a guidebook. See
the link below for the waterconditions employed by TMC. It's likely that
your local supplier will use TMC as they're probably the largest wholesaler
in Europe. They also breed most of the tank bred species you're likely to
see on sale in the UK They'll likely also emulate TMC's conditions but speak
with them first anyway.

Don't worry about dissolved oxygen or redox potential. I've never measured
either, or copper but if you've got copper piping in the house it might be
worth a consideration?

Calcium and Alkalinity isn't as important a consideration if you're opting
for a fish only system. Personally I couldn't own a tank without an anenome
and a couple of clowns.

I started my first tank off after reading only 'The Interpret encyclopaedia
of the marine aquarium' a book you've already read.

There's no reason why you can't begin setting the system up right away,
it'll take another 3 to 4 weeks before you can place any life in the tank,
time in which you can read up some more? If you're wondering about the tank
and accessories, people online here will be pleased enough to advise.

A set of books I'd love to own would be baensch marine atlas, there are
three volumes in all but for around £75 I'm probably going to sit on Santa's
lap for more time than I'd like....

If you're going for a large tank with reasonable lighting, skimmer etc
you'll be looking to spend around £2000.00 to set it up.

Hello Scott,

For prices try Mail Order, although books are not discounted very
often. I am in the U.K. also. You are doing the right thing by
spending time/money reading, before parting with your "hardearned" on
equipment and fish. Careful !! There is a lot of expensive, antiquated
"junk" out there, waiting to be palmed-off on the unsuspecting. I have
fallen for it several times.

2 books I like reading are :

"The New Marine Aquarium" by Michael S. Paletta, and "The book of the
Marine Aquarium" by Nick Dakin, which has some stunning fish photos
in.

I agree, I have gotten a lot of good information, along with some good
insight on the reef aquarium from this book. I only wish I had gotten it
before I started my own tank.
