Small Fish for a small tank

What is the smallest fish (freshwater or sal****er) that could permantly
live in good health in a 5gal tank? in a 10gal tank?

Any schooling fish fall into this category?

With such a small tank frequent water changes are mandatory.
In many ways small tanks are harder to maintain and the
chosen species should be thoroughly researched so that
you provide the correct water conditions and decor.

A single male Siamese Fighting Fish (Betta splendens) - 5g
A pair of Lyretail Killie fish (Aphyosemion australe ) - 5g
6-8 Neon Tetras (Paracheirodon innesi) or similar - 10g
A few of the smaller live bearers like Endler's (Poecillia spp) - 10g
Dwarf Shell-Dwelling Cichlids (Neolamprologus spp) - 10g
A half dozen Pygmy Corydoras (Corydoras pygmeus) - 10g

I'd add pygmy gouramis to the list. There are several types (licorice,
croaking etc) and with their labyrinth organ, they are more suited than
fish without auxiliary breathing methods. Your problem in a 5g tank
(beside water toxins) will be keeping it reliably heated.

my vote is for pygme seahorses :) they are really cool and 10g is the largest tank you
should be thinking about using. they will never outgrow the tank but dont plan on keeping
to many of the fry, as they will out populate the tank :D

they will hang !!!

I'd vote for some gobies. They are so cute and the bumblebee ones have
the sweetest faces. They are relatively easy to care for. All you need
to add is some PVC pipes for them to hide in and sponge filter and
maybe a heater.
