View Full Version : Pond Foam

Charles
April 15th 04, 03:44 AM
I had an experience with foam building up on the pond where the water
from the filter returns via a small stream like feature. Foam would
be as much as 4 inches high and would appear in the morning, to
dissipate during the day.

I thought it might just be from DOC, so I put in a small bad of
carbon, that did nothing that I could tell. I did a complete water
change, spring cleaning in the pond, and the foam persisted.

Then I got rid of most of the parrot's feather, Myriophyllum
aquaticum, and the problem went away, now I just have small (dime size
or less) spots of foam that drift to the nearest leaf.

I don't know that the parrot's feather was causing the foam, I wonder
if anyone else has had similar experience.

All i can add is that i had the foam build up in my hot tub when the
total PH wasn't right.

Foam in spring is often caused by pollen. Look around the pond, what's in
bloom? Trees are especially bad right now. You can check your pollen
situation at weather.com. ~ jan

Parrot feather is my veggie filter in the winter and I never see foam
when the fish aren't spawning. I pulled a few handfuls the other day
and threw it into the fish pond and the fish began eating the snails
off it and spawning on it. I saw foam then.

Another perfectly good theory ruined.
This didn't seem like the spawning foam, seemed different somehow.

It's gone now, so it will remain a mystery

Thanks to all.

I get a foamy surface after the frogs have spawned and the spawn is
decomposing. Could it be this?

I don't think so, I only have one frog (as far as I know) and haven't
seen any evidence of him spawning. It's a small pond, only about 350
gallons and not much wild life. The foam didn't look like what I have
from the goldfish spawning, it had a different appearance. It hasn't
occurred since I got rid of most of the plants, still a mystery.

Not the spawn, but the male addition to the deed, and/or pollen can cause
foaming, but we've had lots of pollen blowing around here and none on the
lily pond till the frogs got hot & heavy. Hopefully I won't find any
drowned in their passion like last year, one young couple fed the tomatoes.

The mystery is solved, it was the goldfish spawning after all.

No pollen yet (plant kind) that comes later in the year when the area
turns yellow from the neighbor's tree. (I don't like that tree)

Speaking of Spawning! Wow! My 9 guys and 2 gals have
foamed up the pond, lilies torn asunder, pots upside down, and
tons of Foam... I have been netting it out for 24 hours and it
still isn't anywhere under control.

This is the first time these koi have have gone Crazy... these guys
are nine years old. I kept my eyes on the two females - they
seemed somewhat fatigued but nothing they couldn't handle! LOL!

I ran water tests last evening - all parameters within range.
Good thing I was transferring water at 310 gallons per hour.
De-Chlored of course. Now will add Koi-Zyme.

Its the high protein diet of the fish, namely eggs that creates the
additional ammonia and subsequent nitrites. The few babies that will make
it are nothing, as far as load goes.

Its the high protein diet of the fish, namely eggs that creates the
additional ammonia and subsequent nitrites. The few babies that will make
it are nothing, as far as load goes.

Rich, I'm looking at koi that were mere eggs a couple of
seasons ago! LOL ... I haven't purchased a koi since 1998.
I have the 6 or 7 originals and their babies.... that is all. It
amounts to 14 fish! Most all of them did the spawning...

I'm keeping an eye on the nitrites and ammonia... thanks for
the reminder.
