View Full Version : Haring

I came out this afternoon and saw it big and white. A haring? For the
first time in 5 years I saw a haring on my next door tree. It flew away. It
was looking my pond over.
1. I thought they won't go near a pond if there too many trees a round
2. Cause they cant get up and go is a short range.
3. Shell I shush it, shoot it, or band plate together?

Tips for herons, egrets and other fishing birds:
- netting over the pond
- chimney flue in the bottom of the pond
- put in an electric fido shock fence
- a motion activated sprinkler
- Migratory Bird Act forbids lethal methods,
heavy fines and jail time take away from pond time ;-)
good luck!

Ow, now I need a cave in the middle of the pond. At this rate, I won't
be done till next year.

You don't want to get done, if you do then you have to start another
pond, bigger this time.

Just outside a fish hatchery near here there are trees FULL of egrets
and herons, probably 75 to 100 of them. They don't seem to mind at
all.

Only NETS keep these birds out. They will fish a pond clean. We have a lot
of trees and shrubs... it didn't even slow them down. The smaller herons
didn't care much for wallowing through plants at the waters edge so learned
to land on, and fish from the plant pots.

Don't bother as they don't work. Most of our fish refused to enter these
flues. The bird waits patiently until the fish forget it's there then
snatches them up as they leave the flue. Nets work 100% of the time.

and keep the net up off the pond, but draped down and attached. herons walk just fine
and they WILL walk under the net if they can. they will come down into the pond
(they swim just fine) and fish thru the net if they can. herons make their living
out of finding fish. you cannot hide fish from a heron unless it is inside. Ingrid

I have a 1 acre pond and have a concrete ornamental 5 foot gator
painted like a real gator on its bank. In another area of the pond
near shallower water I have a three piece gator (about a 4 footer),
which looks like a gator submerged partially in water, and to top it
all off I have a floating foam gator head (equal to what would be on
about a 6 or 7 foot gator) that bobbs around the pond and changes
directions according to wind and current. Its been a very ong time
since i have had any predatory bird problems.............

Well my website has no pond or koi stuff on them, its mainly geared to
home shop metalworking, but on a few of the projects page are some
pics of the pond, mainly due to the project interests not the pond per
se. One page with poond pics is the Sidearm cutter project page.......
While I enjoy a pond and fish its not my main interest, which is of
course metalworking.
