View Full Version : returning to the hobby

Hello gang!
AFter repainting the house this holiday, the wife said we could set back up
one of my tanks (Woot!) I haven't kept marine fish for many years, and I've
been reading a lot (maybe too much, lot of different opinions) Anyhow, I
wanted to describe what I'm thinking and see if there are any compatibility
problems, etc.
Tank is a 20 long. I will be using a Magnum 350 cannister filter and a UV
sterilizer. I will have 20 lbs of aragonite and RO/DI water from my local
fish store, and I'm cycling with ammonium chloride instead of damsels
because of cost, primarily.
Now for what's going in there.
My wife really loves the coral banded shrimp. Since we can't put that in
right away (at least when I was keeping the recommendation was 6 months
established tank before inverts.) I want to leave room for one.
Sorry I don't have scientific names right here at my elbow, I can get them
if needed.
Foxface
couple of Centropyge angels (I'm thinking lemon peel and half-black/coral
beauty)
royal gramma
possible a clown and anemone down the road.
My question(s)
Could I possibly squeeze another small fish in there?
Because of territoriality and keying in on colors, could there be a
foxface/lemon peel territory problem?
In which order would you guys add these fish, as I'm going to add them one
or two at a time?
Thanks in advance. i'm excited about getting back into the hobby!

Sorry I can't help you with your questions but can offer another place
to look. http://reefcentral.com has tons of information regarding
reefs and sal****er tanks. I have a fish only tank and find the
information there just incredible. It's has a huge member base with
lots of experiance.
You don't have to register or join to look. You do have to in order
to post though. No gimics or B.S. with just lots of info and people
trying to better the hobby and help others. I would guess it's
probably the largest forum for sal****er tanks.
Good luck with your tank!

If your going with corals I wouldn't put in any angels.

no corals, perhaps an anemone later on, but no corals. I don't have the
cash for trace elements ;-)

most of those "trace elements" are actually unwanted, IF that is really your objection to
corals, kalk will do all you need. and not much gets cheaper than kalk.

Thanks, then I might give them a try later on.
I'm cycling with ammonium chloride...day two..mmonia levels are maxed out so
I'm not adding any more until they drop back down, correct?
If this were your tank, in which order would you add these fish:
foxface
royal gramma
lemon peel angel
eibl's/keyhole/halfblack angel (depending on availability)

:) some of the softies will help with nutrient export also :) just an additional hint

yea you should go high, then once it falls to bout 1ppm you should keep it around there
until nitrats show up, then back down to .25ppm ammonia until nitrites fall to 0

id do it in this order
> royal gramma
> foxface
if i see corectly its a 20 pick only 1 of these :
