Is it possible to use the Bak-Pak 2 without the filter media?
I've got a small 15 gal tank with low bioload (2 fish) and a small chunk of
living rock (gonna get a few more soon)
Just need to know if I should remove the filter media and if doing so will
it cause any problems?
I know they have a reef version, but I have the opportunity to buy a
slightly used BakPak for $60
Suggesstions? Comments?
Thanks in advance for the info..

Yes.

The reef version mostly doesn't have the filter media.

My opinions may have changed, but not the fact that I am right.

Desmond, I took the filter media out of mine and filled it with live rock
rubble. Seems to work good. Use good sixe chunks and put it in loosely so it
does not impeed the flow through it, The LPS gave me the rubble from the
bottom of his rook curing tank at no cost.

With the LR rubble, do you have your heater in the tank or in the skimmer? I
am tempted to do that, but I have an 11 gal tank so room is at a premium, so
I am trying to keep the heater in the skimmer.

the biomedia takes away from the LR filtration causing less bacterial
growth in the rock.replacing allbiomedia(balls,ribbons,cubes,etc)with
LR is the most natural and safe means of biological filtration in reef
aquaria.
and....
y would you put a heater in a skimmer, being a reduced flow rate
wouldnt that effect the overall heating of the tank.put it in the sump
or tank where it will get optimal flow rate, and more efficient use.
