View Full Version : Help training shy Koi

Edward Haworth
April 29th 04, 02:42 AM
About 6 weeks ago I restocked the pond with some young Koi (~2" mixed
colour mostly but two 4" ghosts as well).

I appreciate that fish usally take a while to become acclimatised to a
new home but they have been constantly hiding, mostly grouped together
underneatha patch where the liner overhangs. They ignore all food
(there is plenty of crap on the bottom for them to eat a this time of
year though). By this point, late spring, I'd have expected them to
start coming out of their shells a bit and maybe taking the odd food
stick.

Does anyone have any advice as to how I could help calm them down a
bit (they are in no danger from predators, its a steep walled central
London pond so no Herons/Kingfishers etc.). Water lilies are just
starting to open and I imagine these will help.

I'm not worried aobut their health, they seem well and active when
spooked.

Cheers,
Ed

Patience young padawon. Sit by the pond, and let them see you. It helps to
drink a beer or two whilst you do this.

For hubby it's New Castle Brown ...and he actually does drink it by the pond
in a pint glass (bought some for him at World market that are the real
thing). If he can't find Newkie Brown ......then he'll settle for
Boddingtons in the can with a widget or a Fosters Bitter. ;) True Englishmen
love their lager. (I prefer a Shandy myself or a glass of Sangria.)

Lisa

ps....we do have two new tiny butterfly koi that stick together and don't
seem to enjoy eating with the other 4 fish we have. :(

Thanks - I'll try and be more patient. The weather is just getting to
the point where I can indeed drink a few beers by the pond (not the
last few days though!).

I have learned over the past year or so the only thing that is more
important then water in your pond, is patience in the ponder.

NUMBER ONE RULE OF PONDING:

#1 Whenever fish, new or old, are acting in a way you don't approve
(nagging uncomfortable feeling on your part) Check your water quality,
ammonia, nitrite, pH, KH & nitrate. Then report here.

Now if I could only teach BV to paste that, along with his patience quote
(which is the #2 rule), I'd be a happy rec.ponder. ;o) ~ jan

ooh...I love lists...let's keep this thread alive...

1. Whenever fish, new or old, are acting in a way you don't approve (nagging
uncomfortable feeling on your part) Check your water quality, ammonia,
nitrite, pH, KH & nitrate. Then report here.

2. The only thing more important then water in the pond, is patience in the
ponder. Most problems can be solved by just sitting patiently and letting
nature take control. This rule is invalid unless rule #1 has been observed.

3. Algae are not bad.

Ammonia, nitrite are negative, nitrate is just a trace <10 mg/l.
KH is about 10 dH
GH is >16 dH
pH is 7.6

I can only compare to aquarium water but the only one of these
parameters that is slightly concerning is the GH - this is due to the
hard water that originally filled the pond and there is very little I
can do about this. Certainly other Koi have been fine in this pond in
the past, again in hard London water.

July 19 till 2 8. Southwest airline. Ontario California, one stop in
Vegas, then Baltimore.

Can you recommend an area to stay at near Baltimore and DC if my visit will
include touring DC, Baltimore waterfront, Southeast Virginia, etc? I
checked on line, but I've forgotten the different areas! What do you
recommend if I'm coming with my wifey, 3 daughters ages 10 yrs, 8 yrs, and 9
months?

In Baltimore the Inner Harbor is very nice, with shopping and aquarium.
They also have a wonderful railway museum. Annapolis, for the naval
academy. DC, too many things to mention. National Zoo, Smithsonian,
Capital, Whitehouse, Washington Monument, Bureau of Printing & Engraving.
Many have tours, but some do to terrorism, are closed or limited. Richmond,
my ponds. Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown for the history buffs,
Norfolk for the Navy ships, and Virginia Beach for the beach and fishing.

RTB,
I went to college out there by Norfolk, Virginia. But thanks for the
reminder of all the beautiful cultural things! Having lived out here in
California for 2 decades now, I have forgotten CULTURE!

Maybe you can help me since BV is staying silent! Where around the DC
Baltimore area is a safe area I can stay at with my family! Somewhere nice
with an old world charm!

I have not had a lot of opportunity to stay in the Baltimore area in several
years. The area down around the inner harbor is mostly convention center
area, and is kept very nice and clean. The scenery is nice and it is close
to Little Italy, and just beyond is the Greek area. Good food. The other
area in Baltimore proximity with a goodly amount of lodging that is
reasonable new and in a reasonable neighborhood is at or near BWI. In the
Washington area, for character, I think Alexandria is hard to beat, but I am
not sure if any of the hotels are in the older part of town or if they are
all down near National Airport, in what is called Crystal City. The other
areas with large numbers of hotels would be Arlington, which is nice, and SW
Washington DC. Personally, I don't like to cross the river, but that part
of town is not too bad.

I think if I were traveling to the area, I'd stay in Bal'more before I'd
stay in DC. I think the inner harbor area is a bit more family friendly then
DC at night. There are plenty of shops, restaurants, etc. You can rent
paddle boats or take a tour of the harbor on a larger boat. The Bal'more zoo
is awesome, as is the train museum (although I don't think it has fully
recovered from this past winter's damage), and the aquarium. All worth the
cash.

DC is just a short drive or train ride away so it is very accessible. DC of
course hase a plethora of museums, monuments, etc. The zoo is large and
nice, but I think I like the Bal'more zoo better.

Annapolis is also a great place, but a bit further out. It has a lot of
character, and can be very romatic, but I am not sure how kid friendly/fun
it can be.

There are numerous hotels up and down the roads between the two cities, but
I think a family vacation, you'd prefer being in the city.

Wheaton, MD ... it is on the wonderful metro to downtown DC. too bad you wont be
there now with all the azaleas. sure is gorgeous. It is going to be hotter than

Thanks you pond head! You still haven't answered my question. I am looking
for an answer that will lead me to a page in my trusted AAA book as to which
area to stay! And when you say city, which city did you have in mind,
Baltimore or DC?

Furthermore for all I am paying you to be my travel agent the least you can
do is answer my question promptly and completely!

I want a refund!

Oops I didn't pay you now did I?

Really do you live in Baltimore? If I gave you some hotel names and address
will you be able to tell me if it's an ok area?

JMK,

I'd feel comfortable in any of the hotels that say they are in/on the
Balitmore inner harbor. You'll be close to food and fun. In the DC hotels,
you'll be instantly close to the museums and other family fun. I'd feel fine
in Columbia or Ellicott City (my hood), but that is a bit outside the city,
the burbs. Not a problem really, I am just thinking if I were on vacation in
this area, I'd want to be in the city (either one, smartass) not in the
burbs. The columbia area hotels, are within a short drive to Bal'more and a
slightly longer drive to DC or the DC Metro. As are the Ellicott City
hotels. Most of the "airport" hotels are fine. I wouldn't say great areas,
but airport areas like any other. The DC hotels that I'd consider will be
marked as downtown, arlington, and capital hill.

Baltimore area hotels:

DC area hotels:

Now, where do I send my bill?

Don't you feel so much better helping out a fellow ponder!

On the serious side, thanks for your excellent response! I truly appreciate
it.

As to the bill, just take some out of the shareholders pond fund! Doesn't
sound like you have been spending time on our pond anyway!
