know, I've asked this before, but I've forgotten, and my archive search
has turned up some confusing posts, I need more practice searching through
there.

Why should one not use a canister filter (for ex. an Eheim 2320) on a
marine/reef tank?

Also, recommend a site for making sumps? I have a couple empty tanks in the
garage that I'd like to do this with, but would like to see some designs
that you guys like. I love Matt Blackford's plan
http://www.thekrib.com/Filters/trickle-blackford.html , minus the standpipe
through the bottom of the tank.

I'm going to utilize as a drain a hole that already exists in the 75 USGal
acrylic tank that ia couple inches from the top. It's been plugged, since
it's been in use for a couple years as a FW tank with the aforementioned
Eheim. I can get all supplies, but since the opening for the drain is
horizontal, I will need some kind of screen that is big enough to not plug
up quick, yet will not allow critters to be 'drained'. Suggestions on
something I can purchase or DIY for this screen?

Muchos TIA

I'm not closed-minded.
You're just wrong.

its not so much that you should not use it for a marine tank, you are in the marine.misc
group posting this so its totally valid that you wanna use it on a FO/preditor tank or
species tank, for these they are great to have, and in some cases are hard to beat.

in a reef, the LR and any possible DSB... will have to compete with the canister filter,
canister filters are really good at nitrification, but DO NOT do denitrification, this
lack of denitrification is built by the the designers its not a case of one may and
another may not, this will leave you with increased nitrates, or at least make your LR/dsb
work even harder or feed the ton of algae you are fighting.

ill leave the rest for a later reply as Ill have to dig around for websites to post.
