why don't you pick up the cysts and hatch your own??
its not difficult at all and that way you can have a constant supply.

It's not difficult for the people who have no difficulty with it.<g> I've
tried to hatch brine shrimp in a variety of ways, and they never hatch. Gave
up years ago.

what is so hard about putting a 1/4 tsp of cysts into a gallon of water you
removed from the tank during a water change and adding an air stone to it
for 24 hrs??? (longer at lower then 80* temp)

Beats me. I can do almost anything else aquarium-wise, but I've never been
able to get the damn things to hatch. <shrug>

Hello Dinky,
I haven't tried to hatch any for years either, but the result was
disappointing to say the least. LOL.
Possibly the LFS had had the cysts in stock for too long.
I now use (for freshwater tropical fry) "Liquifry" or "Tetramin"
powdered fry-food, both of which seem very good, but now that MO seems
a better option, I will probably try again in the future, although I
did read that there is a shortage in the supply of "San Francisco
Brine Shrimp" cysts, at present.
Regards, Fishnut.

I don't know what the extended "shelf life" is for the cysts but the ones I
use I bought from brineshirmpdirect.com almost 2 yrs ago and they still have
an excellent hatch rate.

Hello kc,
I last tried to hatch a batch (then gave up) about 40 years ago.
Things may have changed a little since then. LOL.

Ok, I can get them to hatch fine. Inverted pop bottle with a line in
the lid. Works like a charm. But then what? What this guy probably
wants are adult size brine shrimp. Hatched shrimp are almost
microscopic. So have you been able to get them to grow to any size?
If so, please tell us how. What food? What filtration? What size
tank?

So anyone know where to get live brine here? Like others I don't care
to breed
brine, I don't have the area nor do I care to raise brine, that's why
I am looking for a source.

sorry for the late reply but my ISP has been having problems with news.
I hatch them and then feed them phytoplankton. keep the water slightly
colored with the phyto.
the trick is to not overcrowd them. after hatching I feed half the hatching
to the tanks and the other half go into a 10g tank for growout. while they
are growing out the daily hatchings are all feed to the tanks.

Do you use filtration of any kind? Such as a sponge filter? Or just
an air stone? Or nothing?
I had trouble with the nitrates going through the roof.

just an air stone, and you have to do water changes to keep the water in
check but IME it was Ammonia that starts to show up if you overfeed. there
is nothing but the glass of the tank to hold the bacteria to break it down
into nitrites and nitrates.
I always use water from the tank to do any needed changes. I believe that
has less shock on the BS when you put them into the tank and they live
longer IF they don't get ate.

BS eat anything
you do want to get them eating phyto before adding to the tank, BUT
you can raise them on V8, skim milk, bakers yeast, powdered gatorade, crushed flake food
(into a powder), rotting tree leaves, the list goes on and on, they eat juat about
anything.
you dont NEED filtration, but if you have it you can get higher numbers in less space, a
bio wheel under an airlift works nicely. other things that work are plastic just smaller
than BB sized hollow balls found at crafts stores, they can be inserted in the mix, and
easily removed (most float)
the problem is brine shrimp have almost no nutritional value alone, you have to feed them
something that does so they can pass that along. if you are buying live BS from your LFS,
then chances are they have not eaten in days expect them to be hungry, so feed them 6-12
hours before feeding, also if they are white colored turn down the air so it just moves
the surface, it will help them grow hemoglobin(sp) which makes up some of there
nutritional value.
