View Full Version : Mag v. Rio

I have noticed that people seem to dump on RIO pumps a lot. Not just in the
newsgroups, but at LFS and such too.

I was wondering why this is? I've never had any Mag Drive pumps but I have a
couple RIO's that have been nothing but useful. Less than 2 years all be it.

Why are Mag Drives so much better than RIO's?

I don't like anything that can dump oil into the tank.

Which one dumps oil?

I have had both RIO 2100 and 3100's as well as Mag drives.
Have had both fail, but have had better luck with the mags

Rick, there have been pictures posted when Rio pumps completely fail.

Fortunately, that never happened to me. But the bigger issue to me is that they
don't like to restart. I had a Rio 600 on my Remora skimmer that I would unplug
for one hour during feedings. More often then not, I had to thump it on the
side to get it to restart, even with meticulous cleaning. That was exteremely
frustrating.

If it never turns off, and doesn't melt down, it is a good pump. However, since
both of those other flaws exist, I won't use them.

I bought a new Rio 2500 from one vendor, and within 2 months it wouldn't start
without being hit on the side. Ridiculous. Mag pumps have been far more
reliable, with me only having one failure. Danner Manufacturing honored the
warranty, and sent me a new one out. Mag pumps have a 3 year warranty.

I totally agree with Marc. I'm in the aquarium maintenance bizz and some of
the systems I moved in to service were set up with Rio pumps by the owner or
other maintenance company. Eventually they fail or just plain wear out. I no
longer have any clients with Rio equipped systems. All the fish only and
fresh systems below 90 gallons are equipped with Mag drives, All the reef
systems and tanks above 90 are running external Dolphins. I recently had a
Mag drive 2, that is powering an ultraviolet sterilizer on a fresh 150 start
to make an on-off buzzing noise. I removed it, took it apart and found
nothing wrong. I'm on Long Island and was only 10 min. from the Danner
plant. I dropped in, they tested the pump and said the mag coil was weak and
handed me a brand new pump n/c. The tech said he was very sorry for any
problems this pump may have caused. I said no problem and keep up the great
work. That's the type of company I like to deal with.

I have found Rio pumps to be very reliable.

After 2-3 months of use you can rely on them to seize up when they start.
Replacing the impellor buys you another 2-3 months.

Yes, I could have saved quite a bit of money if I had given up on Rios
earlier. I think that vendors like them because they come with such a wide
range of fittings. It makes them easy for customers to set up.

I have to throw a couple other pumps into the mix....CAP & Dolphin.
They run like champs, don't have issues with restarting, etc. Dolphin
spocifically is excellent!

Rio's are trash IMO. I have 2 large Rios that sit around as spares in
the event I get desperate.

Just MHO
