Just wondering if rec.ponds ever does a roll call every now and then?

Just to see where everyone is from and what other interests and hobbies
they may have?

Well I dont know if they do or not but here's me. I was an Air Force brat,
have lived in or around Austin since 1970 where I attended UT. We bought
this house in late October and my obsession with ponds began when I
unboarded this mysterious hole in the ground. At the same time I moved my
one man print shop into our garage, hence the posts any time of the day.
Can you tell it's been a slow day? I'm 52 going on 18 and some of my
interests include my wife, picking up our 20 month old granddaughter every
other weekend (what an unadultered joy!), fixing up our yard and home,
setting up an aquarium, baseball card collecting, spending time with my two
grown kids and immediate family - all whom live between here and San
Antonio, learning more and more not to sweat the small stuff, taking time to
smell the roses (we have 8 bushes) and appreciate all the people I am
fortunate enough to know, including my growing family here-not necessarily
in that order. I am quite spiritual though not particularly religious. I
love humor. My best friend died the same week we closed on the house and
there was so much I didnt do or tell him. I wont let that happen again. So
here goes - "I love you guys". Oh wait, that's a beer commercial and I dont
drink.

John DeBoo here, 55, retired & loving it. Have lots of hobbies such as:
grandkids (#4 will appear in Dec 04), reading good books, woodworking,
gardening, model car and larger scale model ship building, collecting
some coins & stamps (nothing of value but fun anyway) and computers.
I've a small 125 gal pond in the middle of our backyard garden with a
small fountain & waterfall (area which used to be an 18x36 swimming
pool). Lots of roses, marigolds, chrysanthemums, camomile, basil,
chives, dill, thyme, bachelor buttons, red hot pokers, onions, carrots,
garlic, parsley, zinnias, cosmos, VERY tall sunflowers (9'+ when fully
grown), dahlias, lilacs, corn, tomatos (our dogs - MinPins harvest
them), squash, portulacas & sweet alyssum bordering the small waterfall,
mexican evening primroses, canterbury bells, petunias, nasturtiums,
mint, snapdragons, daises, euphemous(sp) and a couple other goodies I
disremember the names of. Pond has some fish (gold feeders and skeeter
eaters in it & lots of plants.

Good idea, especially for new folks and moldy oldies alike.

We live in SE WA state. Jan, of jj's ponds, got me started in ponding, gee,
about 8 years ago I think.
DH works in the nuclear industry. I'm going back for my masters in teaching
this fall - I want to be a science teacher and have a pond in my room...
two eldest children graduated from high school this year, going to college next
year, youngest son is a freshman in high school this coming fall.
Other hobbies - reading, writing, reading, occasional quilting, reading,
haphazard gardening, reading, uncertain cooking, reading, being mother to the
eldest's rock band, editor of daughter's better writing, cheering section for
the football playing youngest (Go Bombers!)
Rosie and Heidi, the watergardening labradors, complete the family.
Next!

My name is Ron and my wife is Belinda.
I'll be 52 the 20th of next month.
This coming September we will have been married 30 years.
No kids, 4 cats, about 40 goldfish and 400 radios.
I'm a ham radio operator, call is KC4YOY. I also collect
antique radios. There's a link to my web page below if
you'd like to see what that's all about.
We've been in our current (and last) house just over 15 years.
We have almost 3 acres of wooded land, very little grassy yard,
most the area around the house is gardens and growing all the
time.
Our pond, about 1600 gallons is a converted spa/hot tub that's
located on our walled patio. I got tired of trying to keep the
spa clean so we just didn't use it for a couple of years
and then saw a magazine article about a fish pond. We've
enjoyed to pond way more than we ever did to spa.
There's a link to our pond web page on my main Radio Heaven
web page.
I really enjoy the pond newsgroup, I visit several times a day.

I wonder if there are any other members of the group
in the Charlotte NC area?

Best Regards.

Ron

I'll be 74 in September. Don't feel a day of it of course. I've got two
sons,
6 grandkids plus one Great granddaughter.
Youngest grandchild is 20 - the twins are also 20... different son involved
;-)

My hobbies are similar to Kathy's ... i.e. Reading! That, water gardening
into the ninth year now ...
and rec.ponds consume much of the rest of my time.

Jim and Phyllis Hurley
June 19th 04, 04:19 AM
Phyllis and I are in Mississippi.

Phyllis is a school administrator of a K-12 system and I am a minister and
professor of family therapy. I am 59, she is 58.

We got into ponding about 6 years ago when we built a 2900 gal pond and then
1000 gal of veggie filters on a berm by the pond. I remember so well the
500 gal my dad built with his dad in California. It is really my intro to
ponding...over 50 years ago. I was especially impressed by the free baby
goldfish that appeared in his pond.

We have three boys (24,28 and 33). All grown and out of the house.

I do a lot of gardening (salad) and hunting. Phyllis Is very involved in
field trips and such for her students.

I have been working on our yard to get it to a point where one old guy with
a riding mower can handle it. It is about 2 acres, so that is a task.

We enjoy sitting by the pond when it is cool enough.

My kids keep threatening to buy me a tractor with a scoop and several loads
of dirt when I retire...in a decade! They say it is easier that all the
dirt work they have done with me.

Mike Patterson, aged 43, computer network geek by trade (just hired on
at T-Mobile this week), 2 kids, married since 1979, live a little
south of Atlanta, GA, USA.

Non-family-related interests include ponding, reading, history,
flying, and shooting. Despise TV except for the History Channel.

I have a pretty new 1375 gallon (US) pond with goldfish and shiners.

Been reading and posting here for about 4-5 years.

Worked on the pond off and on for about 3 years, then last fall got
most of it done in one 2-week burst of sweaty work. Let it settle over
last winter, then in February made adjustments and got it going for
real.

Looks pretty good right now, but I think I'm going to thin out the
water hyacinth and let the water lettuce grow instead.

Pickeral rush has gotten enormous, and the 2 lilies have lots of
leaves but no flowers. :-(

I'd like to get rid of the shiners in the pond, but I hate to take 'em
to the bait store, and catching them is problematic anyway.

Got so many little tiny fish fry I have no idea what to do about them.

Oh, and I -still- plan to do the "fire & water" pond soon. I think I
have figured out the best way to do it...

Reside NE of San Antonio TX. Retired.

Ponds are a recent interest, starting with a 110
gallon stocktank and slowly working up to a 200
(or so) gal. in-ground pond est. winter 02/03.
Inhabitants are rosey red minnows & whatever
else shows up.

150 gal stock tank has 6 goldfish (comets &
shubunkin), a smaller stock tank has more
minnows (back-up stock, since nothing much
bothers the stock tanks). All tanks are planted.
Goldfish get filtration; other tanks don't.

Other interests: Cats (4), SF/fantasy/mystery
reading, gardening (mostly roses & bird/butterfly
friendly plants), backyard bird watching.

Hi,
My name is Bonnie and I'm a ponder. I live in a rural area
of NW New Jersey, been here for 28 years.
It all started about 10 years ago when I visited my sister's
farm and her husband had just installed a beautiful pond. I
then decided I could do it too and went to a garden center
and bought a 100 preformed pond put it in the back of my
little Honda and drove home - I thought I was a ponder.
After killing all my fish a few years later I found this
group and found out how to put in a "real" pond. I think
that was 7 or 8 years ago. My husband Ralph has not loved
every moment of this adventure, but he does enjoy the results.
We have been married for 39 years. One son 37 and a
daughter 33. One granddaughter 9. I keep myself busy with
quilting, reading, gardening and I love listening to music
of almost all types. I've recently been diagnosed with a
rare autoimmune disease, Primary Biliary Cirrhosis. Much of
my time has been spent learning how live with this disease.

JD, here. 57. Been ponding since '90. Have two ponds, one ~1,000 gal and
one, recently redone trying the bog gravel filter idea in the pond, ~ 1300
gal. Seems to be working fine. Granbury, TX is home. Been in nuclear power
since '66. Four grown kids, six grandkids and Max, our Schnauzer. Have
converted two of the kids to Schnauzers but haven't porged them, yet. DW
tolerates the ponds, enjoys the pool more. I recently built a deck around
one of the ponds so she is enjoying them more, lately. She has just been
diagnosed with BC, so your prayers would be appreciated and would help.

Widowed, retired, proud grandfather "Poppy," all in less than a year.
The pond in question is about 2/3 acre, with hardy lilies potted in plastic

I'm trying to return to lotus growing after a couple of down years; just 1

The pond is infested with large-mouth bass and Walter, a _very_ well-fed

Janet in Niagara Falls, Canada here. Married to a wonderful guy for 16 years
now. We have 3 great kids, 15,12 and 9 that love the ponds and fish.
Currently our setup is a 200 gallon top pond-veggie filter that feeds a 35
foot winding stream coming down a hill. It empties into a 300 gallon bottom
pond filled with plants and comets. Currently we are getting motivated to
dig some more and almost triple the size of the lower pond. (Think good
Niagara Clay! Yuck!) Some day I'll have my koi pond but that can't happen
until the kids are done with the pool! ;o) We've been at this property only
3 summers so I figure we're doing good considering there was nothing in the
backyard but a pool and gravel. Now we have stone walls, retaining walls and
lots of wooden decks. The other project that is supposed to get done this
summer is to cut a 10'x19' patio into the remaining hill. Last property was
a farm complete with cows, geese, etc. I had a wonderful clay bottom pond
that was probably close on 10,000 gallons. We stocked it with koi but sadly
left them behind when we moved.

The only real hobby here is gardening, ponding and supervising pool use in
the summer. Winter, well it's reading everything I can get my hands on. :o)
Just one crazy dog here now, a jack-a-poo who thinks that anything floating
in the lower pond is fair game. Ever see a 8 pound dog patiently wait for a
WH to float close enough to gracefully lift it out of the pond that proceed
to attack it and rip it to shreads? LOL! He thinks the fish are his pets and
partakes in "fish kisses" every night. The Manx tomcat has absolutely no use
for the ponds or fish after falling in last summer! :oD

Hey!
Maureen in Phila here. Previously for years and years and years, worked in the
Neonatal ICU as a transport RN. Now working OB/GYN in a clinic in the city.
Loveit. Love stainedglass, and any glass actually....Took care of my parents
for years, now standing behind my little sister who has breast cancer....cancer
sucks.
My un-also-ex-significant other dug my pond for me, about 5 years ago, and I
have never regretted it. Love a bottle of $12 merlot, guinness, and hot
coffee....by the pond if possible, with a friend is preferable.
My three sons are grown, one is out in Utah in the AirForce. I have 1 and 1/2

Well, to start with I am a disabled 59 year old Ms. with a schnauzer
and a half. And just spent 10 years taking care of a mother with
dementia aka alzheimers. She died in 2003. The last five years were
rough and I contented to be alone to recover. I started water
gardening around 1996 and didn't learn much until I got my computer
and found rec.ponds. The pond got expanded four years ago to about a
1000 gallons and contains 6-7 inch goldfish and 12 or so sneaky 1"ers
that wouldn't go in the minnow trap. It's about 10x15x36+ with a
waterfall, a fountain and too-large plant shelves. It is surrounded by
flower gardens and can be viewed from the patio door from four rooms
and a deck at the backdoor. My other interests are sewing, needlework,
reading, gardening and the Net. I went to China last year and hope to
go on a Russian cruise next June provided hostilities don't increase
there or here. I couldn't travel before and now when I can my knee is
giving me trouble. Oh, I forgot I graduated from UW-ST.PT. and live in
Mid-Wi. This week my Lilies are blooming due to cool weather and our
short growing season. Happy water gardening.

RichToyBox
June 20th 04, 02:38 AM
I got started with ponding after my DW saw my sister's ponds and stream that
they added to their back yard. Until then, I had 1/2 acre of grass to cut
with no obstructions. Went to one of the big box stores and bought a 220
gallon preform, brought it home tied to the top of the car. Didn't get it
off the car and found out one of the local pond and garden centers had them
1/2 price, so took it back and went to the p&g and got two preform ponds.
Set them up in sight of the dining room window. Hads gorgeous plants, about
20 koi, 10 catfish, 3 big goldfish and lots of little goldfish. End of
season, got rid of all but one catfish and all baby goldfish. Next year
realized koi cannot turn around in preform ponds so built a big liner pond,
about 1500 gallons, with waterfall running into the first of the two preform
ponds and then into the other and pumped back. On year 4 the preform ponds
split and the koi started getting sick from overcrowding, so took out the
preform ponds and built a new pond bigger than big, 4000 gallons. Every
year since the filters have been enlarged to keep up with the growth of the
koi. Year 6 or 7 the 1500 gallon pond went through a raising of the sides
to enlarge it to about 2500 gallons. Last week it finally got its bead
filter system.

DW and I have lived in this house for 31 years, one son, just returned from
3rd tour in Afghanistan with SF. He has two daughters that live close. One
daughter, a biology teacher, has two daughters. DW has played daycare for
each of the granddaughters. I retired as a concrete materials engineer with
Virginia DOT 3 years ago, but continue to teach concrete technology 3 days a
month.

We have belonged to the local water garden club, with me serving 3 years as
president, DW is now serving 3rd year as president, and I am the editor of
the newsletter. We also belong to Mid-Atlantic Koi Club, and we just
entered our first show.

We also have numerous flower gardens, mostly wild flowers or near wild
flowers, though there are roses, peonies, dahlias, butterfly bushes, iris,
daylilies, pitcher plants, bog orchids, and several japanese maples within
some of the beds. Between the ponds, flower beds, grandkids, and rec.ponds,
I stay busy.

Hello - this is Jacqui in Hamilton, Ontario. I've had a small pond for
about 5 summers now. Lucky me, it came with our house!! I've got a great
hubby who gamely helps me tackle all "our" projects and 3 sweet little
girls... hoping to adopt a 4th in a couple of years (need a bigger house
first!).

My pond is currently about 300 gal and I'm hoping this summer to use only
biological filtration, nothing mechanical. I have a basset hound with a
fondness for extension cords, so we want to keep her safe. I'm stocking up
on watercress & water chestnuts from the Asian Grocery near us & got a ton
of hornwort from my mom's pond. We have a few goldfish, mostly rescues
from the feeder fish tanks at Petsmart - a treasure trove if you care to
take a chance.

Other hobbies... pottery, reading, collecting My Little Ponies, researching
all things Chinese, trying to get my kids to eat vegetables, cooking and
shopping.

Good idea...
Bobby, 36 live in Mesa Arizona just east of Phoenix. This is our
first house, had the pond for 4 years. First thing I did when we
moved in! Always had aquariums, kept at bucket pond on the apt.
balcony before the house. Have Koi, a "mystery" goldfish that showed
up on his own, 2 aquariums (one is the koi nursery), parakeets,
cockatiels, a mangy black cat who doesn't bother the birds or fish, 2
desert tortoises, 2 shelties "Mojo" 9 and "Deja Vu" 3 yrs old. Live
with my partner of 7 years, thank gosh he puts up with me and all my
animals!!!

Kirsten, 49, just relocated to Marietta, GA (just north of Atlanta) from San
Diego after 30 years there--just couldn't come up with half a mil++ to buy a
house there! One of the reasons I bought my house here was because of the
pond...little did I know what was involved :-)
I sell clothes at Nordstrom Department Store, travel, have two "kids"
Joey, my orange tabby and Charlie-girl, my black Persian mutt kitty.
Currently have five goldfish--one being the sole survivor from the former
owner who said, "there might be fish in there, I'm not sure"! I decided he
needed buddies, and it's so cool to see him swimming right next to them all
the time.

Had a small pond when I lived in VA and built a slightly larger one when I
moved to my wife’s house in MD. My third one here in WV is the largest at
about 1400 gallons. Still tuning the waterfalls, so we have not introduced fish
yet.

loving it.

In order to afford my PORG habits I practice Architecture on the side. I am

My Younger Brother and I are in to this Koi habit (see his pond pictures in

In addition to ponding, I collect classic American Cars (V8), and I love
Fishing (California to Mexico, to Canada, to Alaska) What a dichotomy!
I also love to travel. My family and I just got back from a Father's Day
trip to Mexico. Puerto Nuevo....All the Lobster I can eat......

My biggest interest for sure though is my family! My 3 brothers, 2 sisters,
mother (my father passed away), wife, and other family members. The worth
of a man is the family that loves him.

And I look forward to a friendly contest with BV as the resident court
jester! (He does have a head start on me though, being that English is my
second language!)

BV aka Jeff from Ellicott City, MD. So we're a zone 6ish pond. We get a hard
freeze in the winter, and 100+ temps in the summer.

I have one pond that is roughly 3000 gallons. I use a second smaller pond as
a VF, which overflows a stream back to the main pond. No UV and no
artificial, mechanical filtration. I used 45 mil EPDM for both ponds, and am
currently lining the stream with a layer of concrete for aesthetic purposes.
The plumbing is all 4'' PVC. We have a bottom drain, and use a 1000gph
Beckett pump.

I've got 4 Petsmart Koi mutts, 4 average goldies, and 1 glorious comet. Oh,
and we have somewhere around a bazillion fat head minnows.

The pond has been designed to be a natural looking, wildlife-friendly pond.
Rocks are used as an accent and do not line the entire perimeter. The
wildlife has crept in, and the pond is now home to at least 3-4 species of
frogs that live en masse in and around the pond.

You'll hear my pond refered to as Shareholders Pond and sometimes Rainbow
pond. To make a long story short, we've had some color issues with our
water. First clay, and then a painful experiment with dye. Nuff said? All
water parameters rock solid through both fiascos. LOL.

Other hobbies? BBQ'ing, rock climbing, music, my kids, F1 racing, and
anything that involves beer.

I got into ponding about 1.5 years ago, and dove in head first. I now have
my second pond liner in the yard ready to be sunk, and BTW, I traded a beer
for this liner. :) It's a hard preformed liner. I also have a piece of liner
ready for my soon to be installed Lotus garden.

Yes, I am a PORG, and damn proud of it.

RL name is Steve, 47, and DW Seanna (pr. "shawna"), 45, married 24
years in Ottawa, Canada. We both work in high-tech, and so spend
waaaaay too much time in front of one of these infernal machines.
Sons: 19 and 17; future DIL has been sighted and will become official
at some point. Other inhabitants are three Siamese cats.

I've been hanging out on this ng since ~1996. We dug a 5000 litre
(~1200 USgal) pond in 1997; horribly-out-of-date pix of it and us can
be found at http://members.rogers.com/swatsons.

Up until this spring the only filtration was those useless sponges
that fit over the pump intake, plus whatever plants happen to be
sitting in the waterfall headpond. The most recent project was to
improvise a new intake-side filter, which consists of a large, lidded
bucket full of pea gravel. The bucket lies on its side on the
bottom, and water enters through holes drilled in the lid, passes
through the gravel bed, and is sucked out by the pump at the other
end. It has now been running for over a month, has not yet needed
flushing, and keeps the water nice and clear. We took lots of digital
pix during construction, which I will post Real Soon. I may
reconstruct the headpond in to a veggie filter this year, but there's
a *ton* of other lanscaping work to do, as we had a sunroom built last
year, and that work pretty much destroyed the backyard. Plans include
a second pond of ~1000 liters, up against the opposite side of the
sunroom.

Other hobbies include model railroading (I'm webmaster for
www.ovar.ca), playing folk guitar and reading all sorts of stuff:
mostly philosophy, science and SF/fantasy.

My name is Susan, I'm 42 and I'm a PORG. *grin*

I live in Durham, NC with my s.o. Ron, our four (indoor only) furballs I
mean cats, two guinea pigs, two hamsters, 55 gallon aquarium, and
outdoor pond piggies. Our pond is about 800 gallons and my
father-in-law and I put it in last summer. This is my second pond as I
had one in my previous home which I put in by myself. I couldn't ahve
put this one on myself as the location turned out to be a big slab of
sandstone lurking about five inches below the surface. However with the
aid of one hastily rented electric jackhammer, my f-i-l and I had the
basin carved out about four hours later. Already planning my next pond
as we bought this house as a temporary stopgap until the s.o. was
finished with school. Next house will have *more* property and as such,
a *much* bigger pond.

I have a 19 y.o. son who lives in southern CA with his dad. Despite
what I think, he thinks Rancho Santa Margeurita and southern "Cali" is a
lot more exciting place to live than Durham. Still working on luring
him back to the right coast. *smile*

In addition to ponding, I also do needlework (projects gotta take 200
hours or more for me to be happy - I think being a PORG has affected me
in more ways than I thought), love to cook, garden, read, and do small
fix up type stuff in my house (installing new lights, ceiling fans,
moderate types of electrical work, painting, etc).

I'm an avid reader and some would even dare to venture the word addicted
in my presence. Also, I am a black hole when it comes to books - books
come in but they never go out again. Everything I am interested in
(ponds, needlework, cooking, gardening) is reflected in my books. In
addition I also read science fiction, fantasy, horror, biographies, true
crime, just about anything but romance. In addition, I have also been
involved with science fiction conventions for over ten years, primarily
running charity auctions. I have a lot of fun, have gotten to meet and
chat with most of my favourite authors (including Ray Bradbury YAH!),
and raise money for a lot of good causes. *smile*

The s.o. is currently a full time student doing rotations to earn his
physician's assistant certification. Since I like my projects and like
to actually do them (put in the pond last year while he was in London,
with his knowledge of course), he doesn't mind what I do. *grin* OTOH,
the neighbors have had a few things to say. *laugh* The women say I'm
setting a bad example while the men say that I'm adding more to their
honey do lists. Not my problem, I say. *evil grin*

Will be 50 years next March and been a ponder for 8-9 years. Started with a 50
gallon pond at the last house which spawned :-> two aquariums in the house.
Moved 5 years ago and graduated to a 1,200 gallon pond (still have the 2
aquariums).

Current known pond inhabitants: 2 adult koi (bought for $8 at the market) with 4
offspring. Couple of Sarassa comets and several assorted fantail goldfish (39
cent PetSmart specials). Each spring I donate 5 small fish to my
neighbour/friend which I take back and board for the winter. They have my old 50
gallon pond. The sarassa's were originally from them.

Married to the same woman for 21 years this past March. Met her at University
and it stuck. No kids (human ones anyway). Two black kittens (Pepper & Chloe).
Dog is on the list but can't seem to find the time.

Hobbies: gardening (moved 9 of 12 yards of mulch this weekend), playing with our
two cats, wine (400+ bottle wine cellar) and traveling. Spend time transplanting
critters that try to take over my garden (so far this year 4 ground hogs, 2
rabbits and 2 star nosed moles).

Oh yeah, I live in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.

Spend a lot of time lurking in this group (nice to see so many friendly folks).

Hi, I'm Sue Walsh age 59, wife, mother of 3 girls, grandmother of 4 (2
boys, 2 girls). The girls and their families live in NY, 1200 miles
away. My Daughter Laura got me started with ponds 4 years ago by
sending me a barrel garden for my birthday. I now have a 1600-gallon
pond with lilies and gold fish.

Husband Dave & I live in Brooksville, FL zone 9b, just north of Tampa,
on the West Coast of Florida. Generally hot (90's) & humid all summer
& fall. We get frost 3-4 times each winter, so all my plants die
back. Basically our growing season is March to January.

I am the director of the Nature Coast Botanical Gardens in Spring
Hill, Florida, which consists of 3½ acres of potential gardens. In
the past 3 years we have created 8 of the 16 gardens we hope to
eventually have there.

I also am a Master Gardener in Hernando County and Butterfly Gardener
both at home and at the Botanical Gardens where I designed our
Butterfly Garden. I am on the board of Directors of our local garden
club. I have written a book on Butterfly Gardening in Hernando
County, which I hope to have published soon.

I love cats, birds, butterflies, dragonflies, and now my goldfish and
frogs in the pond. I have always been a ‘Tree Hugger' for as long as
I can remember. All of the above keep me quite busy in my retirement
and I enjoy it all. I was a florist by trade in my working days.

You can see my pond "Rippling Waters" at the ‘I Love My Pond' site.
However, I must admit it no longer has the stream because in the
Florida heat it was just one big patch of string algae. We did away
with the stream and put a new waterfall right at the pond. I will
have to post new pictures to update it.

I'm a 47 year old divorced male living in Dallas, Texas. I have a BS
in petroleum geology and work in the oil and gas industry. In addition
to a 19 year old daughter and a 14 year old son, I have a Golden
Retriever and 2 cats.

I enjoy travel, fine dining, the arts, the outdoors (mountains,
beaches), movies, sports (hockey, football), and doing things with my
kids. I also enjoy trying new things, as long as they don't put me in
jail or in a hospital....

I started with fish in the early 70s (aquariums). The hobby grew to a
point where I was breeding African Cichlids and Discus for sale to
local aquarium shops. At one point I had over 900 gallons of fresh
water tanks and a 200 gallon reef tank. In 1994 I decided to take a
break from fish and sold everything. A few years ago I was in the
process of landscaping my yard and trying to figure out what to do
with an area I couldn't get grass to grow. After some thought (and
encouragement from a friend), I decided to build an in-ground pond. I
added an above-ground veggie filter the next year. Current capacity
is approximately 2,250 gallons with 9 koi (8'-14") and 4 goldfish.

I've followed this newsgroup for several years and now lurk more than
post. I feel this is the best resource for pond-related info on the
net and appreciate those of you who take the time to answer questions.

Note: I attended the North Texas Water Garden Society Pond Tour this
past weekend and will post photos to my site soon (link below).

Born in Hamburg, Germany in 1954. In 1958 my parents emigrated to Canada
(Saskatchewan specifically). They had the option of going to a really warm
place like Australia, but nooooooooooo.

Moved to California in 1983. The weather here in San Diego is just plain
awesome, but the people quantity is getting a tad out of hand.

I'm a computer guy (UCSD 1989) that consults. I do database management, web
sites and generally advise (those that can, do, those that can't, consult)
My significant other and I have been together for about 5 years and figure
one of these days we'll get married. I have one daughter, 25, who is
thinking about moving back to Canada, perhaps to Vancouver.

We built our pond a couple of years ago. 4,000-5,000 gallons and couldn't be
happier with it. We installed a UV when we built it, but it hasn't been on
since last August. We keep gold fish, a red-eared slider we rescued from a
swimming pool named Colombo and an Oscar we got to eat the mosquito fish,
but who, instead, eats fish pellets. We bring him inside for the winter.

We garden like crazy, love to cook and have parties. Photography is a hobby
as well and this year I finally broke down and went digital. I also like
football and baseball, although with our local teams it is trying.

Hi Everyone -

My name is Heather and along with a lot of help from my DH Jim, we have a
lovely 1800 gal goldfish pond fed by a 15' stream from a very small header
pond that we built two years ago. After really enjoying the visits from
frogs last summer, we dug a second pond (at about 800 gal) this spring
devoted to the frogs. It's very woodsy, with floating logs, pollywogs, lots
of duckweed and a few mosquito fish. Pics at
http://community.webshots.com/user/heathersmyth Our property is nearly four
acres of hardwood trees. In the back there are vernal ponds. A lot of our
pond plantings and decor are found on scavenger hunts in the surrounding
woods. Nice decayed logs, moss for between rocks, even blue flag! Kept
aquariums for years but do enjoy the ponds much more. Some of our original
39 cent feeder fish are now 6 - 7" long and beautiful.

We are early 50's, with five grown children, one married. No other pets
currently. Lost our cat a few years ago and DH says "No more until you are
retired".

I really enjoy this friendly group and really appreciate the knowledgeable
help found here!

we've enjoyed tadpoles turned frogs, singing adult frogs at night, flowering

relaxing to the sounds of the waterfall. It's already made itself well
worth the hard pickaxe work involved in digging the hole. I rarely have

For what it's worth, I just want to go on record as acknowledging that your
"roll call" post has enabled me to learn more about my fellow pond-people
than I have ever known about them.

I find myself overwhelmed by the replies to your post. (I was used to posts
on genealogy mailing lists, where the "roll call" is the particular
genealogy line one is searching -- and BTW I would be honored if I could
help anyone with tips about genealogy research), but this......... this roll
call is special.

Thank you again, matrix.

You said it so perfectly.

I lurk in another group (Rec.Auto.Ford.Mustang??), I would not dare reveal
any information about myself in that group, knowing very well it will be use
to assault me later.

Anyway, our pond group here is so loving, so supporting that I did not
hesitate to share.

Matrix, thank you for getting us started with the roll call!

BV, I look forward to meeting you when I come up to Baltimore in a three
weeks. Warn the neighbors!

Hi,
how here, zone 10b.
Passions are ponds, palms, puters, my lovely wife Iris of 35 years (artist),
Octavio and Mitzvah our cats, and our 1+ acres of paradise called The Frog
Pond.
One 30 x 45 foot "borrow pit" natural pond. A 750 gal, a 250 gal, and 15 35
gal "lily" ponds. Worked for years with a large concrete pond builder.
Designed and built filters for large and small ponds, usually concrete. Used
to do lots of maintenance but my back and other circumstances make this a
semi occupation now.
Found this group in the nineties lurked and used a few handles posting
intermittently since.

Hi Everyone!

We're new to the group but not exactly new to ponding (one under our
belts). We're James and Misty and live across the Puget Sound from
Seattle, Washington, USA, Earth.

We just bought 3.5 acres and have plans for 3 ponds:
-A Smaller, but deep koi pond near our deck.

-a large (35 x 45) pond with 15' watercourse and 25' 'creek' to the
pond

-and a very large, 100% natural pond (clay-lined) back in the woods.

Since James is a sculptor, the ULTIMATE goal is to turn the entire
property into a sculpture park for many artists to display their work,
so appearance and displaying art is going to be a primary goal.

Big plans, little Budget. :-)

I guess I'll put myself in here even though I've ignored this "roll call"
so far. I'm Robyn Rhudy in Zone 6/7 in Central Maryland. I started with
rec.ponds in 1996, and the people then were invaluable in helping me. I
have 8 ponds right now of 1800, 153, 50, 20, 20, 20, 18, and 2 gallons. I
also have 4 aquariums, 4 cats, 1 dog, 2 rabbits, 2 guinea pigs, 2
hedgehogs, 1 sailfin lizard, and 4 chickens. I had my 1800 gallon pond
built in 1997. As a result, I set up a small web site on my pond and the
animals I had at the time. I do all the HTML code myself from
scratch and put in all the details I can think of. Well, it's snowballed.
My site is now called fishpondinfo.com and is the largest non-commercial
pond web site that I know of. I get over 3000 daily hits and the site
now costs me close to $50 a month from my own pocket for the 17 GB
monthly bandwidth. Now, people pester me for the answers to all their
questions!

I'm 31-years-old and have lives with my parents on 5 acres since 1997. I
got a Masters in analytical chemistry in 1996 and now test foods on HPLC
equipment for half what my younger brother makes as a computer
programmer (he helps with my site). As a teenager, I was a professional
magician. I was voted smartest female in my graduating high school
class. I was mostly a straight-A student. I watch 3 soap operas daily -
my only "social life." I spend 35+ hours on the animals each week. I
never take a vacation; I can't. The last time I didn't sleep in my bed
was May, 1996. I'm still waiting to be asked on my first date. Any more
information, and I'll make you sick so bye and happy ponding!

I'm a newcomer to this group - found it a little over a year ago when
I had questions about the house in Phoenix with two ponds my wife and
I bought. We've been married for 36 years, 7 months, 20 days and some
odd hours (some odder than others). Two grown children, 1 grandchild,
and a second due early next year. My wife is a teacher, I'm disabled,
and the pond person by default (also chief cook, bottle washer, and
garbage carrier outer).

A number of years ago now, in my little dorm room I used to have a poster on
my wall. "I do my thing and you do yours, and if by chance we meet - it's
wonderful". A bit naive?- thats me. Nonetheless though the poster is long
since gone the sentiment has remained. We are meeting and I do think it's
wonderful. Keep em coming!

btw - The poster was of a woman cradling her young baby, sitting on the edge
of forest, in beautiful green field. I feel sure if the camera had paned
back just a little there would have been a pond in the foreground:)

Dang it! I posted my little blurb yesterday morning and I have yet to see
it show up. So I'll try it again and apologize for any duplication if the
original shows up some day.

Now let's see... what did I say....

My name is Lydia and I'm 'tree yers oood' - plus 27 years makes me 30. My
husband, Adam, and I live in a new house south of Seattle, Washington and
our meager pond is about 500 gallons and 8 or 9 months old now. The
enjoyment it's given us in that short time (flowering water hyacinth,
flowering water lily, flowering pickerel rush, tadpoles turned into frogs,
night time adult frog singing, birds stopping in for a drink, etc) has made
it well worth the excruciating pickaxe digging we endured to dig the hole.
I don't usually have any advice to offer to others here, but I sure do
appreciate and enjoy what I mooch from you all!

Hi James,
Cool! My dad still lives in Port Orchard. He and I moved there in
1988. I went to Marcus Whitman Jr. High, then South Kitsap HS. Skip ahead,
skip ahead, and now I live in Kent (the 'south of Seattle' part).

I know in your roll call you mentioned you guys had just bought your 3.5
acres. Have you come here from far off lands or have you been in the area
for a while - just a new house?

Hank here with the DW Lynn.
I've had aquariums since I was a kid, then went to sal****er and
still have one 60 gal. tank.
In 1998 I temporarily lost the use of my right arm in a work
related accident. I decided to keep busy and put up a new fence and
put in a small pond.(Sure I couldn't put jeans on one handed or tie my
own shoes ...... if your righty try brushing your teeth lefty ......
don't rip your lips off .... BUT I COULD build a little pond)
It was a long summer and my neighbors thought I was crazy
laying on the ground with my trusty little gardening shovel digging
three foot deep post-holes for my fence. When I came home with a
pallet of stone and started digging the pond they knew they were
right.
I finished the pond in September just around the time I
regained the use of my arm. So I used BV's method of planting plus a
handful of feeder GF. and I have been PORGed ever since.
It is amazeing how much wildlife is drawn to such a small
puddle of water and how the neiborhood kids are transformed from
monsters into angels (almost) as the GF and koi nibble on thier
fingers.
I have learned alot about ponds and people from this NG and I
think I would be lurking even if I nolonger had a pond
................... Thanks Gang! Hank

The SRT-8 is the over 500 hp version. Blown Hemi!

So, now I know 2 things about you:

1. You know how to google!
2. You have an interest in all my interests, which is why you are

Did you find out anything else about me?

Back to ponding! Do you own a pond? Koi? Any related topic?

Rowe
June 26th 04, 10:09 PM
Hello,
My name is Kelly Rowe, 37 year old mother of two in California. I've
been lurking off and on, daydreaming about a pond for quite a while
now. Got a stack of black vinyl in a pretty gift bag on Mother's day,
and unorthodox gift, to say the least, but I was thrilled.

I laid out the pond outline the day I got the liner and my
long-suffering husband chiseled it out of our hardpan for me before
dinnertime. The next day we went to Lowe's to get a new liner that was
actually big enough to fit the the hole we'd made (learned a little bit
about pond calculations the hard way) I got some bog plants, a lily and
a ton of anacharis (how do you pronounce that?) from Lilyblooms, waited
a few days for everything to settle in and then added ten comets.

Two weeks, nine dead fish, a million mosquito larvae and about 100
gallons of really smelly water later I began to realize that, although
naturally balanced ponds may happen all over the world, it wasn't going
to happen in my backyard without a little help from me. I drained to
pond, put the plants in the wading pool, the surviving fish into a
bucket, hauled out the nasty liner (I don't ever want to see the strange
things that grow in the dark mud underneath a pond liner again) dug out
a bog area beside the pond, added a pump, a bog filter pvc thingy, a ton
bunch of gravel and even more plants.

So far, so good. Nothing's dead, nothing's stinky. The water's clear,
the plants are recovering from their rude relocation and Poppy (the lone
comet) seems very content. When the budget bounces back from this, I'm
getting some test kits and another batch of fish. I am in love with my
little patch of water, I sneak out to visit it several times a day.

Except...except now I can't stop thinking about that leftover liner
sitting in the garage and I'm thinking a bigger bog or a little
streamlet might be awfully cool. I have it, why not use it? All I need
to get is more gravel and a few more plants and some tubing, maybe a
more powerful pump...hardly anything, really. And there's that space
out front that would be so perfect for a couple of half-barrel ponds. I
mean, I'm going to have to find someplace to put all the extra plants
that will be outgrowing my pond eventually. I can't just throw them
away, now, can I? Ooh! I bet I can find a place for a lotus if I think
about it...

Oh dear...something's started here, hasn't it?

Hello!

We are Lyn and John; married for 32 years and we live in McMechen, WV. We
have three grown children and three granddaughters. John runs his own small
HVAC business. I'm the office people and our sons work with him. I'm late
adding our info, but I have a GOOD excuse; we're re-doing our pond! LOL!
Yes, I admit it; we're PORGs! I started this "pond thing" in our family
after seeing a friend's pre-form, and now my DH is as addicted as I am and
(our three grown children all have aquariums--they don't own their homes
yet; but they all want ponds) Addictive; isn't it? LOL!

We started out with a 50 gallon Rubbermaid tank that our friends gave us 3
years ago, which we outgrew within 2 weeks, and now we have somewhere
between 1,000 and 1,300 gallons depending upon which pond calculator we use.
LOL! We just enlarged our pond and added a small stream and are TRYING to
finish the edging so we can sit and enjoy it before summer ends. John is
great at getting ideas for pond accessories and building them from scratch.
I do days worth of research and come up with plans that he never uses; he
just "knows" what to do! Handy, but frustrating! LOL!

We have 2 large and 3 small koi and an assortment of babies that we thought
were koi, but found out today that most of them are shubunkins! BUMMER!
They're gorgeous fish, but we love the koi's personalities! They're like
little wet dogs! ROFLMBO! We've never seen anything like them!

Thank you all SO MUCH for the advice and chit-chat that I love reading each
day!

Lyn & John
