Strange question

[Karen Mullen]

My pond is situated directly under the electric line from house to garage. I
have a kingfisher who sits on that line and watches my pond regularly. I don't
want crystal clear water. So how do I stop the pond from going gin clear
except for maybe 6 inches down. This %@# bird has already feasted on my 2 koi
( bright shiny gold and white) and shubunkin and a few comets. The pond has an
area that is 5 ft deep and there are 2 large clay pipes down there, but my fish
are very social like to swin near the surface. Short of shutting down the
filter, what else can I do?

I'd do the net thing, but you also could use some of the dye sole for
ponds, or use a lot of Koi Clay to muddy up the water.

The net does not have to be above the surface of the water.

There is a Kid Safe thing that would probably work.

Last month I used the Beckett pond dye tabs, available at my Home Depot, as
an experiment. After a few water changes, I found that the bottom 2 feet or
so of water stayed Opaque. This may be a solution for you.

I once foiled a kingfisher by using a goldfish dummy. It is a plastic goldfish
that floats below the surface, on a length of fishing line, anchored with a
rock.
The kingfisher went for the dummy goldfish first off. That first strike sent
all the other fish hiding. Then the bird dove in the pond six more times trying
to get that dummy goldfish. He was one mad and wet bird by the end of his
fishing trip.
The dummies are called 'heron scarers' and can be found here:

I don't know how your pond is situated, but perhaps you can place some poles
around it - string monofilament fishing line back and forth across the pond.
It makes it hard for the bird to fly in if he doesn't have clear access. If
you wanted to get fancy, you could tie some ribbons or something on it to
flutter in the breeze. Here in FL, some folks like to use the Mylar stuff
that's real shiny, like mirrors: they reflect light and keep things a little
bit disorienting. It's a shame you can't enjoy your fish because someone
wants to make dinner of them; I can't say as I've ever seen anyone ask how
to keep their pond from clearing before <G>.

looked at that on the web and it looks like a good idea for children, but I get
in an out of the pond almost everytime I get near it, picking dead leaves,
moving things around, just piddling etc. so that wouldn't work not would a net
for the same reason.

I put Mrs Stewarts blueing the pond but after 4 bottles I barely tinted it, so
maybe your dye tablets would be more practical a solution.

That's an interesting thought. I do have one of those nylon flowers that twirl
with the breeze in all directions, maybe I'll put it near the pond and add some
streamers. I know it's odd to not want clear water, in Houston I have gin
clear water and loved it, but I don't want to lose more of my fish either and
the SIB bird shows up at the oddest times. I work and can't guard the pond all
the time and my dogs only chase chipmunks!

I had to resort to a net.

I purchased very fine black plastic netting sold for covering fruit
trees from the birds. It is cheap and hardly visible from any distance
away.

To solve tha access problem I cut small (4 inch) section of bamboo
garden stakes and drove them vertically in to the ground around the pond
only slightly prowd of the surface. The net is then streched a bit and
hooked on the stakes. This way it is easy to unhook a corner for
access into the pond.
Works for me.

Hi

I ws thinking of doing something like this across the area always open near the
waterfall and most directly below where the bird sits on the wire. If't 5 ft
deep there so I don't piddle there and most of the other areas of the pond are
covered by plants and the fish aren't as exposed. Thanks for the staking tip.
