Here are a couple of pictures of blossoms, buds and Leaves on the lotus
pond.
No division of plants has been done since 1999. I think the pond is
overgrown with lotus!

Very gorgeous!
Wondering if the frog bog would like to go the way of lotus?.....

You certainly have a talent for growing lotus - they're
beautiful!

Now that's an idea, Kathy. How deep is the frog bog?
I'd go for it.

The frog bog is about 10 inches deep. It was covered with river rock (not sure
why I did that...) I've been having the boys weed it out every fall, then it's
a race in the spring to see which plant can overgrow it in the summer. This
year pennywort and lizard's tail are doing a great job. I've tried to start
seeds of lotus in there, no go but maybe plants will have a better time of it.
Just a matter of luck and karma since the labradors like to wade around in it.
You have to be tough to live in the frog bog.

It is deep enough. Now to get around the other specifics ... lol Aye
there's the rub.
I'd start with growing plants ... I know they are expensive
but I'll bet they would take off. Now, the watergardening labradors are a
different story. Wonder if you could keep them away if you encircled the
plants
in a meshy sort of enclosure .... I don't where I'm headed with this
suggestion ?

Thanks for the compliment, Bonnie!

If the plants could get a start in the spring they'd be ahead of the dogs who
don't want to get their paws wet until it's nice and hot so it might work!

Opps ... completely forgot about watergardeners not liking the colder water,
etc.
If you have a choice in the which of the lotuses to buy... I vote for Mrs.
Perry D.
Slocum. It is very hardy, easy to grow, and sooo fragrant.

Awesome!!! I am so envious.

OK, as soon as Pond #2 is complete...Did I mention we sank another liner
last weekend? Yeeeaaahh boy, and the SO helped dig this one. Anyway, when I
am done with that I am going to dig the lotus garden. I gotta have what
Nedra has.

Calling your lotus garden a pond, would be a disservice.

Thanks a bunch for the compliment, chipper. The lotus garden is separate
from
the fish pond. Do you have room to sink a bit of liner and maybe stick a
growing
lotus in it? It really doesn't take a bunch of room to have a lotus garden
.....
I just got greedy and wanted a big garden.

Hmmm, about how much is enough?? My 'pond' is only 40 gallons with 6
goldfish. They are four years old and a couple of inches long each. The
local garden center has some lovely lotus right now...would that be pushing
things? Or would a separate place be better? How big does one get???
I'm in NC piedmont area (zone 7), so I guess hardiness isn't a problem.

Chipper, I answered your email which was identical to this post ;-)

For the sake of anyone who wants to know what I said:
I'd go with a bigger planting thingy, but really it is up to you. You could
go ahead and buy a lotus of your choice now with an eye towards
getting something larger next year. Do fertilize it now... however, I
really like the idea of the goldfish being in the pond. Mine is loaded
with goldfish which I suspect aids in the fertilizing efforts.
Lotus do spread - alot. Difficult to say how much they spread as
it depends upon which one you buy. You can go by the growers
instructions. Lotus range in size from very small to large ... MPDS
is large.

Of course, take the pictures want ....

Thank you for the compliment. Lotus are my most favorite plant ... from the
leaves
to the pods left over in the winter.

I feed them from the main fish pond ... iows, I use a small gph pump on the
bottom
of the fish pond and flood the lotus garden every 9 or 10 days with that
water..
This year I have also
used Aquaruim Pharms "Aquatic Plant Stimulant". Only used it once and must
remember to feed them again. I do have lots of goldfish and frogs.

Nedra:

My filter system is such that I backwash it to clean it. Would this
backwash water be too strong to put in the Lotus tub? I have a MPDS in a
tub 24" in diameter by 14" deep. It is just sunk in the ground outside the
pond. This way it gets more sun.

Heather, I think it would depend on the size of the pond filter in relation
to your lotus tub.
I hesitate to tell you that all would be well when in actuality it could
burn your MPDS. On second thought, I wouldn't do it ....
I think I'd just go with flooding your tub with the fish water as opposed
to using full strength filter water. Also, you can use the lily tabs as a
fertilizer ;-) I'm all over the map on this answer. Don't want to be the
cause of the death of a lotus.

I concure. Fish water in sensitive areas. Filter water in safer areas, like
veggy gardens.

The backwash currently floods an area 20 x 40 that has a VERY lush ground
ivy growing. I can guess why it grows so lush, lotsa fish poop!

OK so I will top up the barrel with water from the pond and keep using
fertilizer sticks. I am using tree spikes about 4" long. Put in one green
and one pink.

Thanks for the help,
Heather

In reality, as Nedra said, backflushing to the lotus would probably be fine,
but it's not worth risking. Keep your ivy looking nice instead.

I think you have answered your own question, Heather. The area being
flooded
measures 20 x 40. That is way different than flooding a small tub with no
place to go but inside the tub. Stick with the with the fish water and
fertilizer
sticks -
and Thanks BV! :)
