View Full Version : Shipping Fish at Hypo salinity?
Seaguru

Hello,
If is still around, this is question is for you or
any one else who cares to give their input...
Was wondering if I can transport/ship fish for about a 3-4 hour period
either by car or air in hyposaline water with no adverse affects?
(Salinity=1.010)
Or is there a concern with pH dropping, or some other dangers to the
fish?
Thanks.

Damn dude, you just guarranteed that homereef's mailbox is goiong to be
bombed with a ****load of spam by morning, assuming thats a real addy.
NEVER post a real email address on USENET. NEVER NEVER NEVER. The bots pick
them up in seconds and sign you up for everything under the sun.
As for your question, that's a tricky one. Why can't you transport the fish
at 22? Marine fish can survive brief (couple minutes) exposure to straight
*freshwater* but 3-4 hours at the low salinity may cause problems. I'd
repost this, minus the email address, in rec.aquaria.marine.reefs and hope
for the experts to pipe up.

Hmmm... Wonder why the bots generally ignore me?

They don't. They collect anything resembling an email address. Some people's
ISP's filter obvious spam with greater effectiveness than others. Mine,
Earthlink, is rather poor. Just about everything comes through.

the problem is the ammonia is more toxic to them at the lower salinity.
hypo works great in a QT tank to cure ich but I wouldn't take a chance with
them in a bag during shipping/travel. the salt to boost that much water to
22-26 isn't going to be that much.

Dinky,
I know, I was just trying to spark conversation as to why you felt so
strongly about that. The use of "NEVER post a real email address on
USENET. NEVER NEVER NEVER." caught my attention. Sorry Earthlink lets so
much through to your inbox. Maybe someday Spam will be like slate bottom
tanks.

Cuz I learned the hard way, and had to give up an email address that I
valued. I posted a couple years ago with my real addy in the 'reply to' for
about a week when the spam started coming. And coming. Got to where I was
getting 50+ spam a day. I thought I was careful! I posted my complaint on
the Winextra (then Toolfox) groups, and someone pointed out my error. Still
the damage was done. The spam continued to increase, until the address was
unuseable. I was going over my storage limit 2-3 times a day, and missing
real email.
Spammers! You will perish in flames!

almost the exact discussion is taking place on reefcentral right now,
you will find a cross of a few things,
lowering the salinity is a good idea but only under odd ball conditions going down in
salinity takes little effort for SW fish, going UP however is a different story your few
hour drive will require many hours or even days to raise the salinity safely. a catch on
the ammonia side is the lower the salinity and increased CO2 from being in a bag the lower
you can keep pH and the less toxic ammonia will be. but its not a good trade way to many
problems.
in the end ship full salinity and use amquel+ plus or the like.
