View Full Version : Wow! Skippy's filter really DOES work!

Hubby and I built a Skippy filter (many thanks to whomever posted the
URL!) last Saturday, and today we can see the bottom of the 3.5-4 foot
deep pond, even though the water is brownish from the barley straw
pellets I put in the veggie filter Sunday!

Oh joy! I can now see my fish!

Now, to build another one this weekend for my goldfish pond!

Hi,

Can you post a link to more information on the skippy - I seem to have
missed it from the group!

Thanks folks for the links - now all I have to do is translate it into UK
equivalents (I don't think we have these rubbermaid tanks over here!

Hi Granny:

We also just built a Skippy filter and started it up Monday night. My water
had been murky, only being able to see down maybe a foot. WOW this morning,
right to the bottom 4' down. I don't think the media is doing too much yet.
It must be the settling chamber. I do have a fine blanket filter as the top
filter media with WH in the very top.

Very impressed with this design.

You might try a place that sells agricultural stuff, like for horses.

Big scrubbies and small round dish scrubbers.

I will be posting pix soon on my web pages, and will post the URL here

Any hard plastic or rubber water trough will work.

I am going to use quilt batting on top of the media in the one I buikd
for the goldfish pond...

I am very much impressed with this filter!

I took the basic concept but used a hole in the ground with liner instead of
a tank. The pipe goes on top of the liner to the bottom, not through the
liner. The output flows into a stream to the pond. Works great.

make sure it's secured else it floats up. I wrapped mine in the cheap netting
from a fabric store, works great and stops the batting from trying to escape
down the outflow to the waterfall.

When we made ours instead of using a toilet flange we used two shower
drains. They come complete with the perforated grates. We already had two
lines going back to the top of the header pond. Problem is a lot of air is
also going down the lines and we keep getting burping noises. Any ideas on
how to stop this?

Whoops, wrong thread. No for the Rubbermaid tank.

Hmmmm maybe a small vent pipe in the drain pipe?

Hi Granny:

At the pond end or the filter end?

Well, dunno really...was thinking of the vents in the plumbing of a
house...

Wonder if Skippy's site could have any suggestions?

My drain doesn't burp, I think maybe because the drain is twice as big
as the inlet pipe?

Hey, maybe a smaller diameter of pipe running down into the drain pipe
a few inches or so to vent the air would do the trick for you?

Heather

I know what you mean about venting plumbing. This seems vented okay as the
water runs fine. It's the venting (carrying air with the water) that's
causing the noise. The upside is that I can hear this inside the house and
know the system is running. :>)

Old filter had pressurized 1 1/4" inlet and two 1 1/4" outlets. The filter
would always overflow on start-up until the air got out of the lines.

New filter has same pressure coming in. Outlets are two shower drains that
are about 3" across then reduced back to the 1 1/4" lines. Both lines are
at the same height.

Both lines empty just above the water line of the pond at the top of the
stream. I'm thinking if I could extend those under the water maybe that
would help.

Thoughts??
