Water lily problem - brown leaves

I wonder if anyone on this group can provide some advice.

I have a newish pond - it's been filled for about two months. The
water lilies I have bought have suffered from major discolouration of
the leaves within a week or so of putting them into the pond.
Basically the leaves start going brown in patches until they are
completely brown. I can't see anything obvious like larvae. Also,
and maybe connected, the leaves are getting rather ragged at the
edges.

I'd like to understand why this is happening so that I can sort it out
before buying any more plants - they ain't cheap!

Also, the pond suffered a couple of weeks ago from very green water
but this is now starting to clear - I suspect the lousy summer weather
here in the UK has helped suppress the algae. Could this be a
contributory factor to the water lily problem?

Any ideas?

Ours are doing the same thing.. but aren't they supposed to get flowers?

Having had similar problems, and not knowing how many pads you are talking
about this may just be the life cycle. I have decided my 'problems' are as
much sun related as anything. I think plants that get more shade will have
pads that last longer but not be as prolific. You might also inquire where
you got them as to their nature. Some lilies are more sun or shade loving
than others. My biggest consolation had been that I was getting lots of
blooms. Now I have been told this is sometimes another sign of stress. The
plant is sent is sending up more blooms (which turn to seed) because it
thinks it might be dying and wants to make sure it is replaced by new
plants. What most often is the case though, as BV suggested months ago, is
that newbies just have a tendency to over react to any new changes untill
they realize that is just the norm. You didnt mention fish. Make sure you
are fertilizing ecspecially if there are few nitrates in the water.

Mine are doing the same, but I'm in Southern Ontario. I think the cool temps
and lack of sun may be a contributing factor. But the consensus from the
group has been that I need to fertilize. So I bought a small bag of Potash
(10 yr supply) to add to the pond. I've only added one dose (1 tbsp/1000
gal), so it's too early to tell if it's going to help. But they are not
getting any worse.

We have one lily plant that produces pads like crazy but no buds or flowers.
Why who knows, its been fertilized just like the others.

Are they hardy or tropical? Often, if the leaves dry a bit when planting
this will be a result - especially for the tropicals. There is also some
transplant and shipping shock involved. I wouldn't worry about it. You
should be seeing new grown soon.

That was my thought also, that the pads are the ones that came with the
plant and were air dried too long. Why I try to divide my lilies before
they have very many pads up at all. ~ jan

(Do you know where your water quality is?)

It sounds like it may be a fungus (ovularia, ramularia, cercospora)
affecting the lilypads, pinching off all affected leaves usually
clears it up
