UK Skippy filter???

has anyone in the UK built a skippy filter??

if so where did you source the Media?? im seriously considering building
one (for my 1000 gallon) pond but feel by the time ive paid postage to the
UK (and duty etc) any savings made by using a skippy will be lost..

Use green scouring pads from the supermarket or find somewhere to buy them
in bulk like a cash and carry.

We recently had an election here in Canada and I cut up the corrugated
plastic to use in my bio filter.
It provides good surface area and still lots of freedom for the water to
move.

I'm thinking of building one also. What have you identified for the "vessel"
i.e. rubbermaid tank?

My local "country Gardens" store (wyvale) have a 130 litre water butt for
£15 + £8 for a stand (easier to remove the waste if on a stand) its green
in colour and is more athletically pleasing than a big black box.. (IMHO)

so I thought one of them (already has a waste tap) inflow is 40mm waste
pipes (with a venturi (http://www.whom.co.uk/pond/venturi.htm) installed to
increase oxygenation), out flow yet to be designed (trip to DIY store
planned as soon as the delivery im awaiting is delivered). but will
probably be 3" (75mm) drain pipes

im going to modify the skippy design a little, and have a layer of Alfagrog
(as I bought a 20 KG sack) then the layers of "scouring pads" (possibly (as
I have the space in the new filter) with a layer of the plastic biomedia in
it too) then a few floating plants on top and I hope that's gonna be
enough!!

reading up on filter design, it seems water should take 6-10 minutes to pass
through a filter, and you need to rotate the water at least once every 2
hours (preff a higher rate) other wise the bio media is not getting time to
do its job.

this coupled with the veggie filter stream (water return) im hoping to build
will (I hope) be the pond tinkering finished for now...

however as over next couple of months I have a lot of other financial
outlay, these projects MAY be put on hold until October-November

if anyone reading this can see any flaws in my design please tell me?

The circular floor scrubbers that cleaners use with floor buffing machines
would probably do the trick.

I have a couple in an upflow barrel filter that the cleaner at work let me
'borrow', so I know that they're fish-safe.

Yep, they will.
Just cut them up into smaller pieces and toss in the bottom of the
filter.
If you have anything like a Dollar Tree store, you can get packages of
scrubbers that work too.

Also, hair curlers that have the hairy points all over works too.

I also threw small pieces of old PVC pipe in my filter media.

If you have a DIY home center similar to our Home Depot(on this side of
the "Big Pond") or a local roofing man see if they have anything like
"Cobra Vent" See URL's below.

Check out your local Home Depot for a product called "Cobra vent".
It comes in 11.8"(299mm) wide X 20'(6.1m)long X .75"(19mm)thick roll.
It is a non woven matrix of polyester fibers bonded together.
I have used it in all of my filters and pumps, for a year now, with no
side effects. It is really stiff and easily washes out.

my filter has the cheap netting you buy in a fabric store (like you'd use for a
veil, but coarser), and furnace filters, lava rock and cotton quilt batting.
works great.
