For anyone who has one...
Do you cram in as much filter material as possible, or just let it roll
around loosely
thanks

You don't want it to roll around. Toss in enough so the weight keeps
it in place.

I have 4 layers of different materials in my filter and kept adding until the
pond cleared, but I still have enough room on top to add plants. you need to
see what works for your pond.

If it is an upflow there needs to be a space for the algae and stuff
to settle out. The layers get progressively finer and are divided by
the eggcrate lighting grids. I use window screening, bath scrubbers,
nylon net and finally the foam mattres topper. The filter body could
be a Rubber Maid toe or a stock tank. I have the latter for my large
pond. Happy water gardening.
