View Full Version : hydrometer vs refractometer

I've checked the FAQ for this, and if the answer is there, I didn't
find it...

I note that my LFSs use hydrometers to check the SG of their own
water and any samples customers bring in. I happen to have a decent
(temperature-corrected) refractometer, and I've been using that. Since
hydrometers aren't temperature corrected, I'm not surprised that their
readings vary from mine, but the amount they vary is more than I think
I ought to just ignore. My readings (starting with a calibrated,
zeroed instrument) are hovering right around 1.020. However, the
readings I'm given from two local stores are 1.027 and 1.029. A
reading on my refractometer on the water from one of these stores was
about 1.019.

My question at this point is, do I ignore the numbers, and just try to
approximate the water chemistry that the fish (et al) are acclimated
to in the store tanks, or should I try to get to the numbers
recommended by the references, and re-acclimate the fish to that?

Do you use hydrometers or refractometers? Maybe I *am* getting "too
high-tech" with this thing, as has been suggested by fishy staff at
the stores!

Please go easy on me, I'm a thoroughly wet newbie to this hobby, and
it's going to just kill me if I hasten the demise of any living things
I might eventually have the good fortune to intentionally introduce to
my little reeflet. :)

Thanks
