Bolly Olly

Hi
My 4yo. fantail goldfish has started to shed his scales on one side.
No change to tank ornaments etc. He/she has had a recurring problem
(looks like fungus) on the tail - but I've been trying to treat this
(gently) for years.
Otherwise he is bright healthy and seems to enjoy life.
Any ideas?
what are your water parameters. nearly always this is due to really poor water
quality. start changing 30-50% of your water ever day for a week. add 1 teaspoon
salt per 5 gallons (salt with no additives). predissolve before adding OR use rock
salt. Ingrid

Think I'll have to buy some testing kit (any suggestions). I have a
90L tank with one fish & change 20L each week. Have 2x Fluval 3 plus
filters & 1x vigorous airstone. Also I hoover gravel about once a
month (this routine has gone on for 4 years).
Too be honest I thought I was quite good at house-keeping - obviously
not :(
Thanks for your advice.

Your house keeping seems fine. Test kits are recommended. Ammonia, Nitrite,
Nitrate and PH testers.
it is time to thoroughly clean the gravel, that is move the fish to a tub of the tank
water with an airstone (must have airstone in there) and completely remove and rinse
the gravel in treated water until water rinses clean. then reassemble. when I had
gravel I had to do this every 4 months or so.
dont scrub the tank down. there are lots of good biobugs on the tank.
