Is gravel neccessary?

Hi
Is gravel necessary for a tank? I checked one of the links that was
given 2me by Dr Solo (Ingrid) on how to remove + clean gravel n stuff.
I saw pics of a tank with no gravel whatsoever on the bottom, just
potted plants thats all.

I have no gravel in my tanks, just a few large pebbles - its so much easier
to clean - takes me less than 20 minutes to clean my 63 gallon
tank!
