36 Gallon corner aquarium
Maxi-Jet 600 (160 gph)
Stealth 200W heater
24" x 12" Undergravel filter (I can't find one that is triangular)

Is my Maxi-Jet choice correct? Is this too powerful? I am going to
run this submerged to drive the UGF.

I am choosing an UGF because I can't hang anything external to the
corner aquarium. It is against the wall in a corner. Hanging
anything in front will defeat the purpose of buying a corner aquarium
for decorative purpose.

One more question: Is $180 too much to pay for a 36 Gallon All-Glass
corner aquarium + hood?

I have a similarly sized corner tank with a Fluval 304 in a cupboard beneath
it.
Previously it had a fluval 4+ internal that was in the back corner behind
decor and barely visible.
You can get link plate undergravel systems to fit awkward tanks.

Are you running it normal or in reverse?

Ideally, you'd want it to turn over the volume of the tank 3 times in an
hour... so that's 108gph... a 160 may have an adjustment that slows it down,
if not, it MIGHT be too stiff... it might push the fish around a bit, and
they being used to current, might get stressed by pushing too hard...

you may find a better way... UGFs are great... RUGFs are somewhat better...
they don't clog like the usual UGFs do... someone can help you there.. I've
never done it, but know it's good to use too... Secondly, alot of ppl want
double filtration in essence... if you did the RUGF, you could use a sponge
as a prefilter or mechanical filter, and the UGF as the main biofilter....

not bad, but odd shapes and sizes are where you pay more $$... a 54 corner
is 2x more than a 75g rectangle tank... why? more glass lost using odd
sizes....

Thanks for the reply. I have done some research on the Fluval. Is 4+
too strong for the 36 Gallon tank? Will a Fluval 3+ internal do?

Also, I have decided on the following after doing some reading:
I am getting up to 6 Gouramis. I probably end up just with 2 or 4. I
read that you can cycle directly with Gouramis. The book mentioned
using 2 for a 29 gallon tank. I wonder if I can just put 4 in right
away in my 36 Gallon tank with some starter bacteria and frequent
water changes for a few weeks. I am doing that because I won't be
getting a quarantine tank.

I am going to get the rainbow gavel from Home Depot. I like the look
of it.

This is going to be primarily a planted tank. I just don't want to
become slave to my tank because of a high fish load. I am keeping the
temperature at 75. I am not using salt. I read that Gouramis don't
need them.

One question: Are Gourami schooling fish? Will I stress them if I
only get a pair?

Lots of questions so I'll work through;-
A Fluval 4+ is only just big enough. A 3+ would be too small.

You can't cycle a tank with Gouramis - they are all very intolerant of
nitrites & probably won't survive.
Depending on species you might get aggression problems putting six in the
tank once cycled. You would do better to get a pair or trio. Which were you
considering?

Unless you can get refrigerated bacterial cultures ( ie Biospira) the
"starter cultures" are a waste of time IME. You would be better doing a
fishless cycle using ammonia. Do you know anyone with a healthy aquarium?
They will have the bacteria you need so ask them to squeeze their filter
into a bag of tankwater & tip this gungy water into your tank.

If you like rainbow gravel ..... well it's your choice but your plants &
fish will look better against a darker softer toned backdrop.

What lighting have you got? Some plants are easy, some will die without
specialist conditions and there are too many of the latter sold to
unsuspecting aquarists.

You don't need salt for most species.

Don't know anyone nearby with a tank. How about some Rasboras or
Danios to cycle? Will they be killed by the Gouramis later?

I am doing research on plants right now. I found some Amazon Swords I
think those will live. Not sure about the lighting other than it is
fluorescent.
