It sounds like you actually have two different critters in your tank,
because clicking is usually caused by shrimp, not crabs. A simple way to try
and catch the crab is take a glass and lean it up against the rock at a
fairly sharp angle. Drop in a piece of shrimp for bait, and go to bed.
During the night, the crab will go down for the bait, but the smooth sides
of the glass keep him from climbing back out. It might take a few nights to
catch him, but it usually works pretty well..

your a gem. simple but effective, I'd never have thought of that. strange I
had seen something fly across the rockwork last night and what looked like a
piece of algae was left protruding from the hole it disappeared into but
when I went in close to have a look it disappeared down the hole. I hope
it's nothing too deadly.
thanks for the help.

Just a note, if you have any sort of respect for yourself, don't go sticking
your hand in the tank near where that shrimp is hiding.
If you want your thumb to be split in two however, do the opposite!
Mantis shrimps are ~quite~ powerful.

yes I believe a powerful adult can split 10mm thick glass but now I have to
figure what to catch him in if the thing can smash glass.

If you can get to it easily enough and are lucky and there isn't another way
out of the hole....simply find a small rock and shove it in the hole the
shrimp is in and plug it tight. He can't do any harm if he can't get out and
will eventually die.>

It's amazingly cruel, but effective!

the prob is that the rock in which it lives is a honeycomb and he can get in
and out very very very easily. so it looks like a glass or trap and catch
him though at the moment it just seems to be picking at the rockwork around
whichever hole it's in so it might not be that bad, the shrimp if there is
one could be a different story. I found a suspect hole and filled it with
boiling water in a syringe and a few seconds later a bright greenish liquid
leaked out. there has been a very noticeable quietness over the tank and
virtually no clicking for a while anyway.

I have a problem like yours but mine is a shrimp.
I really need to get him cause he is slowly killing off my snails.
Has anybody got any ideas how to do a trap for a shrimp and what could
i use in a trap to get him in there ?
Im sure the shrimp come in the last piece of live rock i added to the
tank.
Any ideas would be great

Well i've kind of caught the shrimp now.
What happened was i saw him go into a hole in some live rock so i took
the rock out the tank and put it in my Quarantine tank. That day he
popped his head out but never come right out of the rock.
So now ive got this shrimp in some rock and id like to hear some ideas
on how to get the shrimp out.I've tried with food but it wont budge.
Any Ideas Would Be Great
Thanks

Take the rock mostly out of the water to encorage him to come out? put it
up on a cinder block or something for a few minutes.
Just an idea..

Tried that no luck.
If the shrimp has died in the hole you would think it will smell but
it doesn't and i dont want to put it back in the tank just incase its
still alive.

What about food? I'm sure if you put a silverside in there and remain still
he should come out for you.

Blow him with a strong stream of the tank water from a water pump?

I've often heard of a freash water dip working really well.
You fill a bucket with same temperature fresh water. If you want to save
it, have a container with salt water from your tank ready as well. Add the
rock to the fresh water and wait for it to sprint out. Apparentlly they
always bolt out like they are on fire. Scoop it out and into the salt water
container.

Check if it still in that hole. Might have vacated while not paying
attention. Or it might have died.

I've looked in the hole and can not see it.Even been gently pushing a
stick in the hole and no luck.
I've heard that they can make door's on the hole's they go in is this
true ?
I thought id see it if it was out as it's in a small tank now but when
i take the rock out the tank now it stinks.

Just pour some fresh water into the hole. Or better yet, some Perrier.
That way, you don't waste every living thing on the live rock.

The FW bath trick is intended to be used for a few seconds, that's
usually all it takes. If he didn't come out, He's dead. After 24
hours, EVERYTHING on that pc of LR is dead, hence the smell.
