Do bettas behave like any other fish when in a relatively large (55 gal)
tank? I didn't want to get one and find out that it just stays in the
corner blowing bubbles. Are there any issues keeping them with cardinal
tets, angelfish, etc? I had one a long long time ago and I don't remember
any issues, but I'm not sure.

thanks,
dwhite

If you mean behaving like other fish as swimming around, they most certainly
do. I have kept them in my 10 gallon with community fish, and my mom is
quite successful with them in her 30 gallon with tiger barbs and community
fish (kind of a weird set up but it works out well for her). Her betta tends
to lurk towards the back but is quite curious. Mine thought he owned the
tank and was a little aggressive towards platies (when added) but had no
problems with cories. I think it really depends on the particular fish. I
have found in general they are a great addition to a tank.

Best of luck!
Elizabeth

Thanks Elizabeth and Splitskull for your comments. (Now there's a sentence

The tricky thing about Bettas is if they don't get along with their
tank mates you'll need an alternate housing plan. The basic rule of
thumb is never keep them with other anabantoid fish [with labyrinth
lung] or any other fish with flowy fins, which they may mistake for
another male betta. [such as guppies]. Because their fins are
extremely fragile you don't want to house them with fin-nippy fish
that could hurt them either. This is why most people would say Angels
are out. [though I have heard of bettas successfully housed with
angels]

Each betta has a distinctive personality and some can be housed easily
with other fish and some cannot. I have a betta that I keep with 3
danios, which is considered a no-no because the Danios are so spastic
and fin nippy. I have never had a problem though. Additionally, I've
had a betta who would kill anything you put in the tank with him
excluding snails and otos only. You may want to try females instead if
you're worried about their temperament. Females [when kept in odd
numbers] make excellent community fish.

I've had some great success with bettas in community tanks;
particularly with otos, black mystery snails, ghost shrimp and other
mild tempered critters.

would a male betta get along in a tank with 3 male guppies, 2 male
swordtails, 3 long finned serpae tetras, 3 goldskirt tetras, and 3
julei corys?? the thing is, i believe 1 of my tetras likes to nip at
fins because some of my guppies and 1 swordtail have bites in their
tails... that's the only thing i'm concerned about. i have suspision
for 2 of the tetras which i have seen chasing others around. perhaps
i should trade them, or are all tetras of these kind sort of mean?

thank in advance,
danya

My (now, sadly, ex, due to old age I think) betta had a whale of a time
in my community (23? gal) tank. He was in there with angels, gourami,
cardinal tetras, and a few others too, of which possibly the only of
note is the harlequin rasboro.

Peace reigned for the most part, as long as everyone remembered the
angels were boss and kept out their way. No problems with the betta
attacking anyone else, or vice versa. There was some territorial
bluffing that went on, but nothing major.

Heavily planted tank - I'm not sure it would have worked in a lightly
planted/plastic tank.
