I'm old enough to know better, single and not looking, work the night shift
as a cook, and I have more than a little experience at fish keeping. I've
had fish over half my life and I've been out of school around 20 years.

Until the last time I moved, I had 17 aquariums. My fish at the time were :
200+ guppies, a one-eyed 12 inch Jack Dempsey "Captain Jack" , a 14 inch
Oscar "Brutus" , around 250 other various American cichlids , about 100
African cichlids, a 75 gallon planted tank with 120 neons and 20 pygmy cory
catfish, a 75 gallon inhabited by a single male 14 inch black piranha ( S.
rhombaeus ) " Jaws" , and around a hundred other fish.

I regained my sanity when I moved, and now I only have 3 tanks. One has 2
dozen African cichlids, another is an Amazonian Backwater planted biotope
tank with around 40 fish, and the third varies from month to month, a few
large tinfoil barbs and whoever is causing trouble in the African tank this
week.

With only a couple exceptions, I gave up on naming my fish after the first
few hundred.

I've kept about 120 species, and I've had the good fortune to get 20+
species to reproduce in my tanks. I'm not a scientist or a fish professional
so I don't know everything; but I am happy to help when I can.

Cheers ;

As a young woman are you really sure you want to post personal information
about yourself on Usenet??
You've provided enough info here that anyone with an hour to spare could
find you.
None of us are immune to such pervs, but personal info like this is just
bait to pique their interest IMO.

Call me paranoid but if you were my daughter (21 or not) I'd take away your
computer privileges.

Anyone who owns a vanity domain can be found in two minutes,
myself included. When I first bought my domain in 1999 I was
paranoid about this but so far nothing has gone wrong.

I understand that- and I *think* (??) I put all of mine on a P.O Box for
that very reason.
Must go check <g>

But I also think that posting personal details (especially by a young
female) not necessary to the conversation/topic can draw the closer
attention of ne'er-do-wells that otherwise would have never even noticed
you.

IMO- whatever!

Not that I'm really trying to figure out info about you Danya, but to kev,
how did you get all of that with just her birthdate?

The key wording is "Info in Danya's posting". Not necessarily her
birthdate. Since she posted via google, tracking info that gets included
with the post allows someone to find where it came from. Danya posted from
her employer's machine (and more importantly, their chunk of the net). The
rest follows from there.

If anyone is REALLY CURIOUS, send me an email. Be forewarned, though. It's
a lot less wow-inspiring than you think. (Isn't everything like that?
except... african butterfly fish (finally got a chance to see one, and
WOW! ultra-cool fish!), and well... lets just leave fish out of the above
statement, mmmm-kay!?)

LOL haha indeed.
You know best dear.

My comments were made with the best of intentions after seeing a post I
considered extremely naive and just this side of dangerous. Live a few more
decades, raise a few children, and *then* tell me I'm being overly cautious.

I still advise giving out personal information on a "need to know" basis-
especially to strangers online, and I'm way more interested in your thoughts
about aquatic husbandry than your birthday.

You are assuming that "she" is telling the truth. You can make no
such assumption, and you shouldn't. I mean this is usenet, who cares
about your physical form. Occasionally I called myself Mandy, and
people automatically assumed I was a woman. Actually, I made a name
out of my handle ManWorld42, as in MAN of the World. Also, Mandy is
not exclusively a female name, e.g. Mandy Patinkin.

I think people overblown the danger of sexual predators on the
Internet. I have been online for decades and I have not been
propositioned once. The danger is overblown by the news media
hankering for the next big story. Nothing sells like fear and sex,
and internet sexual predators encompass both. Incidentally, if
someone in a internet video game threatens you with sexual violence,
that does not count. That is some teenager trash talking. If you
take that seriously, you need to get off the internet and get some
therapy.

Yes you are paranoid. You are watching too much news.

I was attracted by the idea of knowing more about those of us posting
in this group until I read the insightfull responses. My email box is
loaded every day directed to "dick." It doesn't lead to anything and
is the name my nearest family call me, but the fact that the emails
are addressed to my nick name shows they are not randomly sent.

It is a pity that we need to be afraid of our fellow man (or woman).
As a old "gay" man, I have lived with such fears long before I had the
internet bringing people into my home.

I hope we find a final solution to being loving humans wanting to seek
out new contacts and looking to help each other, not threaten each
other.

Thanks to all who responded to Toni, you were showing concern.

Nice to meet you Danya, I'm Red.

My current list
1-65g - Midas Cichlid named Gorby, for Gorbechev, he's got a birthmark on
his head
1 55g - malawi cichlids, half stocked with Lemon Yellow Labs and Blue
Zebras, a 14" pleco, a trio of bronze corys, and Spike and Louis, my 4"
clown loaches who run and own the tank... the bully the cichlids, because
they're 2x their size...
1-29g - planted tank with 65W 6500k PCF, pressurized CO2. M/F Kribs with 4
others from another breeding pair, Male is sterile. 6 Neon Tetras and a ton
of plants...
1-10g with 14 1/4" babies from lemon yellow lab in 55g, bought when she was
holding.
1-5g in bathroom, that holds Bob da Betta, and his posse of 2 ADF, gertie
and bernie
Work tank
1 5g Eclipse tank with 3 female guppies and 1 julii cory... told you that
you'd like them...
Wifes tanks, she's a herp person....
2-25L for geckos 1M each tank, Fred and Jack, for Jackass.. he bites
1 29g for male/female whites tree frogs

Working on getting a 90g, or maybe just a 75g to move into sal****er
with....gotta find a way to sneak that past the warden...

I agree with you, Toni. Having been on the net for ages, I've had my
share of strange and scary experiences. So I tell my teenage daughters
to never give out personal information, even if the person seems really
nice. That nice person could be anyone or anything. I've set up their
chat client to only accept messages from people within their own list of
contacts and I'm going to keep it that way.

I've always been of the opinion that "getting rid of" implies an ongoing
process that will be complete sometime in the future. Possibly after the
heat death of the universe.

wouldn't let me post anymore....those corys i got that were listed as
julii corys at the LFS aren't juliis!! i was finally able to get to
the pics of them on the web the other night at home, and i think i
actually have bronze corys, they're irredescent (or however you spell
it) with a big blotch in the middle of 'em and a real pretty
irredescent spot near their gills.

Hello, all ... my current list is

#1 10 Gallon 1/2 planted 1/2 plastic ....
3 adult platys (2f 1m) 2 baby platys
5 adult female guppies 1 juvie male guppie (that is loving his
harrem!)
2 Cory cats (thriving in my salted tank)

#2 10 Gallon 1/2 planted 1/2 plastic ....
I have no idea how many babies are in there ... atleast 30 though and
adding every day. I do keep up on the water changes ... I have been
told that with such a high load that changing the water within reason
will trick the babies into growing better ... soon I will be taking
some into the LFS.

I think that this was a good idea for us to get to know each other. I
can see some of your reasons to be alarmed, but as you mentioned if a
creep really wanted to get our info they could even without our
birthdates. You can only be so paranoid!

I know quite a bit, but a wise man admits that others out there know some
things he doesn't.
In the aquaria newsgroups NetMax, Mark Stone, and a few others know at least
as much, and maybe more than I do.

A wise man also knows when he has 500 fish too many. ;-)
It took me a while, but I did figure it out.

When you lose sleep or give up social events to care for them, you have too
many fish. For a few months I was working 8 hours a day, watching and taking
care of the fish 7 to 9 hours, and only sleeping an average of 5 to 6.
Temporary insanity ?

Jeez, a lot of paranoid folks are fishkeepers :)
The fact remains: if you behave like a victim people will treat you like a
victim.
If you don't mind then it does'nt matter!
We can't all be wondering well sheesh If i go onto the net will I be stalked
by some rapist or such, bloody hell mate!!! Only bad stuff happens to ppl
who think like this, you attract it to yourself.

And to the original poster Danya, welcome and nice to make your acquaintance
:)
Have a good weekend and happy water gardening.

Hello Danya! Vicki here in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia USA. I
have four tanks that range from discus to minnows and everything in
between. Been house hunting for a while now and when we find the one we
want, I will have even more tanks (within reason) I don't post a lot
here but read everything and add my 2 cent when I have something to say.
Most of the regular posters I consider friends, and if I have a question
I know they will give me a good answer. I hope you enjoy this group as
much as I do.

Vicki

Hi Vicki,
I actually live in Charlottesville but visit Hampton a lot. I have a visit
planned soon and i was wondering where you buy minnows. Charlottesville only
has one pet store that sells fish but they haven't had minnows for the past
month. Let me know,
Elisa

Hey there Elisa,
I go through Charlottsville quite a lot on my travels across Virginia.
My son is thinking of going to UVA but I would rather him go to the
College of Mary & William (LOL) But seriously you have a lovely town
there in the foot hills. I would like to retire up there someday or
close by, perhaps Culpepper or Lovingston. Till then I will stay in
Hampton Roads.

As far as pet stores in the City of Hampton, I recommend two. Tanyas
super pet store on Mercury Blvd (going towards Ft. Monroe, east bound,
right hand side) next to food lion, and Pet World (also on Mercury) next
to the Toy's R Us, going west towards the James River bridge (it is on
the left). There are two more Pet Worlds, one on Jefferson Ave. in
Newport News, and the other one in Williamsburg, next to the K-Mart, on
Bypass road. All of these stores generally carry minnows (feeders) and
the white cloud minnows my daughter keeps. I don't have their numbers
off hand but a quick call prior to your trip would let you know which
store to visit. I recommend the Pet World stores over Tanyas but if
they are out, Tanyas may have what you are looking for.

Hope this helps,
Vicki

Hello fish folks. = )
Kelly from Illinois, USA.
I'm a wife, mother of 2 kids, and Goddess of the fish food and fresh water. = )
I'm a critter person, have been since I was born. I know a little bit about
many creatures, and a lot about some.
I specialize in Bettas, Angelfish, Dogs, Cats, assorted other citters.
I have daily chats with my Siamese cat..mainly because Siamese cats never shut
up, feed several wild Squirrels daily, everyday of the year, by hand. Some
since they came over to my house with their Mother. (I also feed the birds and
bunnies as well)
I'm big on giving each critter you own, no matter what the specie, everything
it deserves to thrive.
There's a huge difference between surviving and thriving. = )
Tanks I have:
75g--pair Pearl Gouramis, male Betta, several female Bettas. pair of German
Blue Rams, pair of Fancy Gups, several large Platies (assorted types), Panda
Cories.
3g Eclipse--One Black Crowntail Betta (male) named Diablo along with his
buds...2 Pygmy Cories.
Several 1g tanks all housing male Bettas.
2 1/2 g tank Used for quatantining, but when not in use for that it houses
another male Betta.
20gh (2) Growing tanks for either baby Bettas or Angelfish (I am currently out
of Angelfish due to an Angelfish related bug, I still think it's the Angelfish
virus but morphed as many virus' do).
Though not currently spawning Bettas, if I am I have many jarred males around.
