Last night I came home from a long day at work and the only thing on my mind
was sitting down in front of my fish tank and relaxing for an hour or two.
I walk into the room with the tank and all I hear is this loud electrical
whirring noise. I glanced over at the filter and noticed that the filter
had no water in it. Then I looked at the tank...and noticed that it had
leaked maybe 20 gallons (55g tank) of water all over the floor. A quick
inspection showed that the tank did not appear to be damaged, all the fish
were alive and well. They didn't even look cramped for space with almost
half their water missing.
I think the only explanation possible would be my CO2 line that had been
going into the filter. I detached it in the morning because it was time to
make another CO2 mixture, and I may have inadvertantly started some suction
at that time and just didn't notice in my rush to leave for work.
I filled the tank back up, started the filter again and watched for a while.
Everyone is fine, and the tank isn't leaking. Now all I'm worried about is
the smell emanating from the depths of my carpet...

pull the carpet and air it out ASAP. You will probably end up
replacing it.

All the more reason to buy an inexpensive check valve. A lesson learned.

yeah you should probably air out the floor under the carpet or else it
could get some nasty mold under it.

I had a two 20 gals. destroyed in an Earthquake.

Immediate steam carpet extraction with vacuum will fix this. Otherwise,
immediately remove the carpet. The bacteria in the water becomes nasty.

If you have hardwood floors....immediately remove the carpet. Steam
extraction will not fix this.

2 words, check valve...

I thought it to be funny in a bad kinda way.... here you were several weeks
ago asking for pictures of tank distasters, and where was your camera????
Ok, it wasn't THAT funny, but I do hope you can get your carpet dried before
mold sets in...

2 more words, Rug Doctor... they are great at getting to the padding under
the carpet...
