John: My fish is more torpedo shaped and doesn't have the red band on the
dorsal fin.

It is Leptobarbus hoevenii, a barb/rasbora species from Thailand. And
it is still a youngster. Schooling species, will grow up to 50 cm (25") and
so needs a pond or a swimming pool. Not suitable for aquariums less than 3-
4 meters long.

No way. They are high-bodied already when 1-2" long.

Liisa: It appears you have identified it.

The fish is also know as the "Mad Barb", "Pink Tailed Barb" or "Red-Finned
Cigar Shark".

Here is a picture of a huge one:

Unfortunately this fish has to go since it has grown to the size where it
will eat any new small fish that I add to the tank.

Sorry: The last link doesn't work. Try this:

http://www.jjphoto.dk/fish_archive/warm_freshwater/leptobarbus_hoevenii.htm

You will see a 12 lb. fish. I don't understand why the LFS would even carry
these.

To make a quick buck out of inexperienced people who think it's pretty...
sadly.

I asked a shop about the painted glass fish they were selling and got told
"but the kids love them". Some shops say "Oh we know X fish gets big but we
will swap it for a small one when it outgrows your tank". Personally I avoid
shops like these.

But I guess it was a rhetorical question.
