View Full Version : Mixing Male Gouramis?

Hello all,
I have a tank with 2 Male Dwarf Gouramis and 4 Serpea Tetras. The tank has
two large live plants and plenty of large rocks to hide out under. The two
male gouramis are constantly fighting, but they seem pretty healthy so I'm
not too worried about them.
My question to everyone is: Can I add other male gouramis (different
varieties) to this tank, or will all the gouramis fight? I would like to
get a blue gourami and a gold gourami, but I'm worried that they will
constantly fight and eventually die.
Thanks,
-David

I have kept gouramis for years and my personal experience with them is
that more is better. Some breeds are less aggressive than others but
only having two can cause problems. With 3 or more they are able to
spread out their aggression.
Hope this helps.

I have kept gouramis for quite a bit as well, and have had no
behavioral problems between males, I've had problems with males
attacking females, but never males against males. I agree with Vicki
S, when she said that the more you have, the better.

That's interesting because a few days ago I talked about my one red dwarf
gourami looking lonely because he couldn't stay away from his reflection all
day. People here said that they are aggressive toward each other and that
having only 1 is fine. If there are no plants (ie, no way to stake a claim
to some territory) then they will be less aggressive. Maybe I understood
wrong?

One is fine and will live a very happy life. Only having two can be a
problem tho. The dominant fish will pick on the weaker one till it
kills it. But if you have three or more than the dominant fish does not
spend all its time picking on the one fish but spreads it out over all
the other gouramis. One nice thing about gouramis is the fact that they
will not bother with any other type of fish in the tank. One more thing
is they have distinctive personality and like their cousins, bettas, can
range from the tank terror to the tank sweety.
