as some of you may realize, i've been wanting a male betta reaaal bad.
but i was told that it may mistake my male guppies for female bettas,
which would be a bad thing. so last night, i ended up getting a 1
gallon "tank" and a gorgeous male betta. is 1 gallon too small?? he
seems happy in there. i just feel like i want to put him in my 32
gallon so he can swim all around with tons of space, but if that isn't
safe, i guess he'll have to stay in the 1 gallon. the thing is, i
have seen pictures of aquariums with guppies and a male betta in the
same tank (plus other fish), so i really don't know what to think
now...

help pleeease

sometimes male bettas will mistake male guppies for other male bettas and
attack. each betta has a different personality so you could have a
reletively easy going male, u could try and just monitor and if things dont
work out, move the betta back to the 1 gallon tank. 1 gallon is the
absolute minimum a betta should be housed in so your alright on that issue.
just be sure to clean the tank once a week and use dechlorinated same
temperature water in it so you dont shock the betta.

I just bought a betta today from PetSmart where they are kept in about a cup
of water on a shelf. I put him into a 55 gal tank today and you could
imagine a big sigh of relief. My dwarf gourami doesn't quite know what to
make of the new intruder into his turf, but I'm sure they will work out
their differences. The gourami hasn't bitten him yet, just feeling him out
a little. It is interesting because the gourami immediately became more
energetic in general, and ate more aggressively than I've seen him in the 2
weeks I've had him.

My two dead bettas.

Well, I have a 100 gallon tank with nice guppies, 2 small angels, 7
small archers, 3 small swordtails, mollies, sunset variatus, and 5
plecos and on these two different times, I have added one single male
betta. And the results were always the same: My male guppies had
their fins nipped and exactly three days later the betta was dead with
all its fins gone, it must have been revenge, the powerhead, or some
other fish in the tank got him...again on two separate occassions.
Funny thing was whenever I was watching, everything was
normal...no fighting whatsoever...

everything happens at night when you arnt watching. i suspect the angels,
mollies, swordtails, since they are nippy, perhaps the archers too, im not
positive about those tho.

thanks everyone for the replies. i think for now i'll just see how he
does in the 1 gallon. i showed my neice my betta today and at first
she said it was yucky (she's 3-1/2). but my nephew (who doesn't talk
much yet) seemed to like him. :)

Hi there.
I currently have a lovely marble male Betta in with females Bettas, as well as
a pair (male and female) Fancy Gups.
The Betta pays no attention to the Gups, and they get in his face all the time.
The Gups are always checking the other fish out, perhaps to see if they have
anything to eat they don't have. hehe
The key with Bettas......
NONE are they same. They all have individual personalities and the only way tot
ell if your Betta would be fine with ether male or female Fancy Gups is to try
it.
You already have a back up plan...your 1g tank that you bought.
So try it out and see how it goes.
Remember, most males have been living a solitary life since they were about 2-3
minths old.
Some may huff and puff and put on a good show for these "intruders", but do no
harm at all.
Some males may attack right away and be relentless.
Some may huff and puff..nip a little nip, chase a bit here and there and then
be done with it. After that they may ignore each other.
On the other hand...the Betta may become the victim and be nipped and chased to
the point of stress related death.
