Need Protein Skimmer Recommendation

Hi all....

I want to invest in a good protein skimmer for a 30-gallon reef tank. I'd
really like something low maintenance and easy to install. Preferably, I'd
like for it to fit in the sump of my wet/dry. The sump is about 14 inches
high and about 8 inches wide.

I just bought a Red Sea Berlin HO, its mounted outside my sump but "hangs
on" and discharges clean water back into the sump. Simple to install (you
need the right pump) and works beautifully.

Sorry Maddie - I just reread your post. The Berlin HO would be way too big
for your tank.

I must disagree.

My Red Sea Berlin is a POS!

It was SIGNIFFICANTLY underpowered by the Rio 2500hp. (Trickle return)

You have to disassemble it to clean it properly.
(A problem in my sump)

I replaced it with an AquaC Urchin Pro, and have been very pleased.
(Anybody want buy a Red Sea Berlin HO (WITH the Rio Impeller upgrade
(didn't help))?)

For a small tank you can't go wrong with a CPR Bak-Pak.
I use Version 2 on my 25 Gal. tank at work.
I have used version 1 (spillway return), but didn't like the salt
buildup)
The AquaC Ramora (SP?) is similar (and probably better), but I don't
care for the "Spillway" back into the tank. (salt crust)

What can I say?? I love mine -- it's pulling out more crap than I believed
was in my tank. I don't know about the Rio 2500, but I am using a Rio 20HF.
Based on the Red Sea manual, I thought that this pump was not adequate, but
after talking to others using it and communicating with Red Sea, I am happy
that it is working well.

Glad it worked for you.
I'm not familiar with the Rio 20HF. does that have more "push" than
the 2500 (that came with mine)? (I tried the 3100 too. POSSIBLY
better)

I got tired of messing with it.

My Urchin worked perfect from the time I dropped it into the sump
(complex install <grin>), until... well it's still working perfect.

And I get 10 times the goo (technical term) as I did with the RSB.

Easy adjust "goo density", too. Just slide the o-ring up or down on
the collection cup (like the Bak-Paks).

I don't even have to turn it off to empty the collection cup.
Therefore no "crud" (another technical term) settling into the venturi
while I dump goo.

Runs on a Mag 3 (I think, I'm not at home). A lot less power (heat)
than the Rio 2500. I think they are about comparable to the Rio 1200.
