View Full Version : Yellow Tang died last night

Hi,

I noticed my yellow tang was dead this morning when I checked the
tank. He was wedged under a rock, and when I lifted it he only
floated with the current. I gave him a proper funeral and pulled the
flush handle. I bought him about two weeks ago from a LFS in NJ. I
purchased seaweed selects for him to eat, and he
has been eating fine, although I noticed no matter how much he seemed
to eat he was wasting away. His rib cage was showing and had a white
patch over them. After lights out I noticed him in his sleeping spot
at the back next to a rock, so everything looked BAS so his death was
a shock to me, and I'm looking for answers.

All the tank parameters are normal, he lived with 2 yellow tail
damsels (I wish I never bought them), a false percula, a flame hawk, a
coral beauty, and assorted crabs snails and star fish. One of the
yellow tails is very aggressive, but the coral beauty seems to keep
him in line. I've only seen him go after the flame hawk, but he
doesn't seem to care. All my fish are MO except the tang and damsels,
which come from a LFS on route 22 in Springfield (hint, hint). I also
had a second clown from the same store that died three weeks ago.
I hope this is enough history, for someone to give a post mortum
theory.

I would like to get another tang but I will never buy from the
forementioned LFS again. I don't like thier policy of only guaranting
a fish purchase for 12 hours?! with a water sample!!, plus when you
walk in there the stink is horrendous! I took a chance anyway since
it was less of a hassle then mail order. Oh, well I should have
checked thier water parameters! Its places like this that are driving
people like me to MO.

Sorry for the long post, but I kinda of grew fond of the little yellow
guy, I guess I shouldn't grow attached to fish. I've been in this
hobby for 1.5 years and it the third death I've experienced, and the
first that upset me.

Stores *rarely* guarantee marine critters even for 12 hours in my
experience.. there may be some that do but I have yet to find one here!

There are no pet shops on RT 22 in Springfield. The nearest pet shops in
that vacinity on RT 22 would be Shark Aquarium in Union, The Pet Shanty in
Scotch Plains, or Ocean Gallery II in North Plainfield. Which one was it?

Al,

I'm sure the original poster didn't want to end up like the people who
posted negative things about petswarehouse in L.I.( sued that is), but from
the description especially about the aroma, it would have to be the one next
to Bowcraft ;o). I personally have dislikes about all three.

One more thing. If I'm looking to spend more then $5 on fish then I go to
Hanover pets in east Hanover, or do the mail order thing.

Drs. Foster and Smith guarantee for 10 days, and I know from experience that
they stand behind it. I agree its hard to find an LFS that will give any
kind of guarantee, but if I usually have to ask them then I must feel
something is wrong and will pass on the purchase.

my yellow tang has a white "patch" about his mid section that lightens and
darkens (to yellow) with him moods. but his rib cage is about 1/4" below
his skin "I Think" as I cant see it, he is to fat.

DFS will give a full refund minus shipping. This is usually worth the
shipping cost. To me anyway.
