View Full Version : Gold Nugget sudden death

Hi,
I have had a 2.5" gold nugget plec for about two weeks in an established
community tank, well planted with OK water (pH 7.0, nit/nat/ammon all not
detected) temp around 22C. No obvious white spot or other illness with the
other fish, and no obvious bullying by the other fish. So I get home from
work today to find it upside down, and not moving in amongst the plants.
Scooped it up and no movement, pretty dead. Only thing was a slight
pale-ness to a part of its upper body, but wondered if that might be due to
it lying dead for a few hours?
Does anyone have an idea what might have happened? I really liked it, and
would replace it but not before knowing what killed the first one.
Cheers,
Adam S

Some fish don't acclimate well, and sometimes the shipping and transporting
is where the most damage is done... there was probably nothing you could do
about it, except try again....

Well, I hope that was the answer, and yes, I think I will replace it. But at
£10 a shot (around $18) it could end up being quite expensive!

From Planetcatfish:
Although strong currents are needed for breeding attempts, only good water
quality and a high temperature are required for this fishes successful
onward maintenance. Thus, characins are good biotope fish but you could look
further afield at discus and gouramis. Most other cichlids tend to over
compete for food with these fish, so be careful especially when introducing
new gold nuggets.
Higher temperature meaning 25 - 30C. Maybe your tank was too cold for him?
