Hi I have 2 tanks one is 55 gallon the other is 125 gallon I am having a
small problem with the 125 both tanks have the same water (tap water
declorinated) similar rock bottom the only difference is in the 125 my hubby
put a substarte in the bottom of the tank for the plants we have drained
the tank at least 20 times in the last few months and my problem is I cannot
get the ph above 6.0 the 55 gallon is 7.0 I cannot figure out why the 125
wont go above 6.0????? I have tried ph increasers and it stays yp only for a
few hours the fish seem to be ok but I cant understand why I cant get the ph
higher can any one help with any advise Please????????? Star

Sounds like hubby use a substrate that isn't designed to maintain a
nuetral PH. You're not likely to defeat it anytime soon, the sub
(what did he use? Crushed coral? sand?) is buffering the PH of the
water to 6.0, you're going to have to remove it, IMO.

It's important to know what was used for the substrate in the 125. If all
other things are equal, then this would most likely be the culprit. You
may want to consider replacing it entirely with somthing that is known to be
inert. There are specific substrates in the market for plants if you still
want to have something targeted for them. Personally, I haven't used any
special plant substrate (i.e.: Laterite, Flourite..) and my plants do well
enough to my satisfaction.
