View Full Version : Very large timers?

I purchased a PFO professional hood with 2 VHOs and 2 MHs. With the
fans, there are five power cords. Hence, I can control each of the four
bulbs and the fans separately.
Add three power heads and that makes seven potential timers.
What timer(s) can control that many devices?

You may look into X-10 devices. Check out www.X10.com
Check out:
Maxi Controller Model: SC503 (16 timer control) they also have an 8 unit
control, but for 12 dollars more, I would add the extra growth ability)
Appliance Module (3-Prong Grounded) Model:AM466
You want to use APPLIANCE modules as they are ON/OFF (non dimmerable),
support larger loads and have 3 pin.
If you are non USA, then they also have European spec units available as
well.

Beside the fact that x10 is a notorius spammer\popup purveyor, and
has dang near reached 'scam' status, the unit you mentioned (once I
figured out how to nav that horribly designed site) is only a
controller. One would still have to buy a 'module' for each device.
$250us +s&h if you had 16 devices, plus all that crap under your
tank. I know I don't have room for it, nor would I recomend anyone do
business with x10.

What I do is look at the AMP DRAW or Current needed by each devide. I got a
heaavy Duty outdoor timer from HD for like $12.00. It has a max load of 15
amps. So I used one of those three way adaptors and have both MH bulbs and
a fan on one timer.

I would build one.
If you have a little cash you'd like to part with and can wait about a
month I'd be happy to build one for you.

Will you get a sticker with "UL" logo on it as well? ;-)

That will cost a little extra :o) (and would take more than a month I
suspect)
The liability waiver, on the other hand, is absolutely free. :o)

Just curios, I am not for long in this country - but
is it legal to build and sell electrical devices without UL approval in the USA?
I saw Marc making some "feeding timers", you offered your timer here... How do you guys do it?
Aren't you affraid somebody will sue you if something happens? Electricity and water does not go well together...
If you had UL approval you probably would be covered... but without it? You know, if you can sue McDonalds
for hot coffee being too hot, I would be kind of scared to sell any electrical devices to the general public...
In the country I come from people do not sue each other so easily, but in the USA? :-)

You are right about the spamming!!!!! And you do need a unit for each
device. The poster was looking for options and that is the ONLY option I
know that will do what he wants! (You can get the same type of devices under
other names, so that you don't support spammers!) Radio Shaq used have a
version. It is still "X-10" spec.

I think it will be much cheaper if he just buy 8 regular timers.
X10 terminal devices occupy the same amount of space and cost more...
If you cannot make something better yourself a regular, mass
produced timer will be better. And you do not need separate
one for fans and lights - just hook them up together putting
extension cord AFTER the clock/timer the way clock will control
everything connected to the extension cord.

That really is a good question.
UL listing is prohibitively expensive and even that won't save you
from a law suit. Insurance would also be very expensive. That's
where quality workmanship and a liability waiver come in. I would
include clear warnings with the product and a statement that the
consumer uses the device at their own risk. If I ever get to design,
build, and sell large quantities, insurance is something I'd have to
look into. As for now I'm just a hobbyist hoping to make a couple of
bucks to support my obsessions. :o)

How do you calculater your work?
How much would I have to pay for, let's say, 3-channel clock
with dedicated channels for MH lights, actinic light, and
the 3rd for moonlight with dimmer and moon phase tracking?
Will it have display and keyboard? Will it be waterproof?

That one sounds like fun.
I'm just a hobbyist who likes to mess around with microcontrollers.
The "Big Project" has been on the drawing board for many years (and on
hold for much of the last 2). I figure by the time I'm done I could
buy 2 commercial products :o) .
Seriously though, a multi-channel timer would not be so hard. Cost
and timeframe would depend on the features requested.
Are you really interested in a custom built timer / lighting
controller?
